Majors Get Back on Track with SAA Win Over Sewanee

JACKSON - After suffering a tough first defeat a week ago, the Millsaps Majors Football Team returned home to take on the Sewanee Tigers in Southern Athletic Association play. The Majors eclipsed over 300 total yards of offense in the first half en rout to a 42-28 win over the Tigers to go to 2-0 in conference. 

The Majors (5-1, 2-0 SAA) received the opening kickoff and put together a beautiful six play, 89 yard drive, which included completions of 40 and 17 to senior Kegan Joplin and a competion of seven to sophomore Mike Barthelemy. Sophomore Trevor King finished the drive with a 15 yard catch and score from Pinciotti to give the Majors a 7-0 lead.

The Millsaps defense came up with their first play of the game on Sewanee's second play of their drive as the ball got away from quarterback Curtis Johnson and was recovered by junior Jonathan Moore to give the Majors great field position in Tiger territory.

It only took two plays as Barthelemy rushed into the endzone from 12 yards out to give the Majors a 14-0 lead. 

The Major D got Sewanee off the field quickly and the offense struck again in a huge fashion as sophomore Zander Romano took a lateral and pulled up and heaved a beautiful 64 yard pass into the hands of King for a 21-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Sewanee (2-5, 0-2 SAA) finally regained possession and was able to put a drive together thanks to their vaunted option attack. They got on the board as Johnson snuck in from two yards out to cut their deficit to 21-7.

After a turnover by Millsaps, Sewanee went into the second quarter, looking  to get back into the game, but the Major defense held strong as they forced a turnover on downs to regain possession in their own territory.

The Majors then put together a terrific ground attack of their own with big runs from Barthelemy and freshman Taz Watson. Barthelemy punched it in from two yards out to cap an 11 play, 79 yard drive and extend the lead to 28-7.

The Tigers responded with a long winded 13 play, 75 yard drive that ate up 7:13 of the clock and also included a fake put around midfield. Johnson again ran it in on fourth down at the three to make it a 28-14 game.

With 1:37 remaing before half. Millsaps put together a beautiful drive including big passes to Joplin and senior Dustin Fawcett and big runs by Barthelemy. The Majors drove down to the one and with five second remaining and no timeouts, Pinciotti took a zone read to the corner for six and gave Millsaps a 35-14 lead going into break.

Sewanee was able to answer back on their first drive of the second half thanks in part to another fake punt and a 21 yard scamper from Andy Moots to come within 14.

Millsaps again answered though with a 13 play, 75 yard drive that ended in a beautiful touchdown reception in the corner by Joplin. The Majors were able to hold strong going into the fourth quarter and took the 42-28 win.

Leading the charge was Barthelemy with an impressive 14 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns while averaging over eight yards a carry and two catches for 26 yards. Joplin added six catches for 99 yards and a touchdown and King added three catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Pinciotti was 14-of-21 for 199 yards and two touchdowns including a rushing TD. 

Defensively, Millsaps got a spark as senior captain and Presseason All-American Jeb White returned to the lineup after battling a back injury. White picked up 12 tackles on the afternoon sophomore Nick Arnold, sophomore Zach Bell, and freshman Eric Martin all added eight. Moore was terrific as well with six tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup. 

Millsaps will go back on the road as they take on an old rivalry in Memphis next Saturday. They will square off with the Rhodes Lynx in SAA play next weekend with kickoff set to begin at 2 p.m. The game can be seen live on College TV Ticket.
