Box Score 2 JACKSON - The Millsaps Majors Volleyball Team was back at it on Saturday, wanting to finsih the Millsaps Invitational strong and defeat one of their rivals. They did that in convincing fashion, defeating East Texas Baptist 3-0 and Belhaven 3-1.
Millsaps (3-0) started the day with ETBU and made quick work of the Tigers in the first two sets, winning 25-17 a piece. East Texas Baptist (0-3) tried to rally back and salvage teh third set, but the Majors were not settling for that and finished the job, winning the final set 25-22.
Sophomore Caroline McKey was brilliant as she came away with a career high 14 digs and added nine kills while freshman Lexus Andrews added a career high 11 dig to her young career. Seniors Kasey Laird and Raven Scott added 10 dig each while Laird added 11 kills and Scott came away with seven.
The Majors then took on their cross-town rivals, the Belhaven Blazers. The Blazers (2-1) came out hot, taking set one 25-20, the Majors first dropped set on the young season. Belhaven looked to take control in set two, but Millsaps came back and gritted out a tough set, winning 26-24. That swung the momentum in the Majors favor as they took control of the match and blasted the Blazers in the final two sets, 25-19.
Laird and Scott were unbelievable during the match. Laird finished the game with 27 digs and 17 kills while Scott picked up a triple-double with 17 kills, 25 digs, and 22 assists. McKey also added 23 digs and 10 kills.
With 28 kills on the afternoon, Laird is now three kills away from joining the elusive 1,000-1,000 club.
At the end of the second game, both Laird and Scott were named to the Millsaps Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Majors will travel to UT-Tyler on Friday as they will compete in the UT Tyler/Trinity Mother Frances Invitational for two days. They will start things off with Texas College on Friday at 3:30 before facing LeTourneau at 5.
