Youth Leads Majors to Huge Win Over Centre

Box Score

JACKSON - The Millsaps Majors Volleyball Team returned to action on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in the Centre Colonels to The Hangar Dome in Southern Athletic Association play. The Major sophomores and freshmen came through big as they led Millsaps to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 win over the Colonels.

"They are definitely playing a big role on our team and are contributing to everything we are trying to do," said Head Coach Jaime Fisher.  "It's not just our seniors getting the job done, we are relying on our underclassmen as well."

That was evident in today's match as freshman Brooke Visoski led the way with a career high 10 kills, sophomore Caroline McKey added nine kills, and freshman Alex Morphew picked up seven kills. The Majors also got four service aces from sophomore Kelley Calandro and 13 assists from sophomore Taylor Zeigler.

Visoski gives a ton of credit to the senior group that has been such a key part thus far, "I had a ton of support from our seniors and the leadership on the court is great. It gives me the confidence when I play to get the job done."

Centre (4-8, 3-1 SAA) jumped out to a 4-1 lead early on, but the Majors responded by tieing the score at seven thanks to kills from seniors Kasey Laird and Raven Scott as well as Visoski and Morphew. The Majors then began to take control of the contest as they went up 18-12 thanks to great all around play from everyone on the court and solid defense.

The Majors (10-3, 4-1 SAA) cruised to a first set 25-17 win as they scored the last three points thanks to a kill by Scott, Morphew, and a service ace from Calandro. The Majors had a .368 hitting percentage in the first set, picking up 17 kills to only three errors.

Centre took the first three points of the second set, but again, the Majors responded to tie the game at seven. This time, the two teams went back and forth as they match was tied at 16. From there, the Majors took complete control of the second set as they scored nine of the next 10 points to blast the Colonels 25-17.

In the third set, Centre again ran out to a lead, this time up 5-2. But Millsaps again responded, this time scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 9-6 lead. Millsaps completely dominated the third set to cap off a terrific all around day and sweep the Colonels for the first time since 2002. It was also the first time the Majors had defeated Centre since 2007 and Fisher's first win over the program.

"This was huge for us, Centre was 3-0 in conference and is always a very strong team, " said Fisher. "We've come close in my time, but always fell short so this was a big win for Millsaps."

For the Majors all season the key has been defense as they were great again today, picking up 68 digs led by Laird's 20 and McKey's 14 and eight total blocks with two coming from McKey and Scott. They held the Colonels to a .094 hitting percentage.

"We know defense is key to win and we have worked a lot on that in practice," said McKey. "That was my focus today and I couldn't of done it without everyone else on the court."

Millsaps, along with Berry today, become the first teams to pick up 10 overall wins in the SAA this season. They travel to Berry on Friday as they take on the Vikings in SAA play. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Zone and 6 p.m. in the Central Standard Time Zone.
