Box Score 2 TYLER, Texas - The Millsaps Majors Volleyball Team improved to 5-0 on Friday afternoon after they knocked off East Texas Baptist, 3-1 and LeTourneau, 3-0 in the UT-Tyler Invitational.
For the Majors, it is the first time they have started 5-0 since 1998 and it ties the best start in school history. Millsaps has only started 5-0 two other times in 1997 and 1998 and they finished with their best records in school history, going 23-7 and 26-9. The Majors have never started the season 6-0 in the program's history.
The Majors (5-0) got things rolling in Game One as they took on East Texas Baptist in their first game of the Invitational. Millsaps raced out to 2-0 lead after winning Set One 25-20 and Set Two 25-22.
In Set Three, Millsaps struggled for the first time this season as they were dominated, falling 25-10.
However, it was short lived as Millsaps immediately bounced back to take the fourth set and clinch the win, 25-19.
Senior Kasey Laird was phenomenal, picking up 17 kills on the afternoon to become the tenth Major to join the 1,000-1,000 club and also added 15 digs, five block assists, and two solo blocks. Senior Sarah Zito followed Laird with six kills while sophomore Caroline McKey picked up 10 digs.
Millsaps followed that performance up with a sweep of LeTourneau as they wasted little time, winning 25-18, 25-15, and 25-12.
Laird was fantastic again, adding six kills, nine digs, and three service aces to her day. Zito added five kills while senior Raven Scott and junior Casey Brown each had 11 digs.
The Majors are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on UT-Tyler on their homecourt at 11:30 a.m. followed by a match against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1 p.m.
