Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors rallied from down two sets to one to defeat Birmingham Southern 15-12 in the fifth set on Wednesday.
It was the Majors' third straight five-setter and first win in that stretch. The Majors got a balanced effort and used their defense to force 38 Panther errors on the evening. Leading the way were Lexus Andrews and Caroline McKey who each posted double-doubles with kills and digs.
The Majors jumped out quickly, winning the first set 25-14. The Majors turned on the afterburners in the set, turning a 15-12 game into the 25-14 win. Service runs by Taylor Ziegler and McKey were key in the rally.
Birmingham Southern rebounded nicely winning the next two sets at 25-20 and 25-23. The Panthers pulled away in set two after it was tied at 18, using a run by libero Lauren Bedford and a balanced attack game to knot the match at a set apiece. The third set went the way of BSC after a service ace broke a 21-21 tie. The Panthers would take a 2-1 set lead into the fourth.
The Majors rallied and tied the match at two sets apiece after Ziegler got the hot service hand en route to an 8-0 Majors' run. That gave the Majors an 18-12 lead. After BSC cut the lead to two, McKey sent the Majors on another run fueled by a pair of kills by Olivia Kleyer. The Majors would win 25-19 to force the deciding set.
Casey Brown and Christina Tilton would get well-timed aces to help the Majors in the fifth set. The Majors grabbed leads of 13-8 and 14-11 as BSC refused to go away quietly. On the second match point, Andrews would get the kill and get the Majors to 5-5 in SAA play.
The Majors also improved to 12-12 overall and will welcome in Sewanee and Centre on Saturday and Sunday for the final home conference weekend for the Majors.
