Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors took the Centre Colonels to the brink but fell 28-26 in the fourth set on Sunday afternoon.
The Majors fell 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 28-26 to the Centre Colonels in a match that was fueled by runs and long service points.
The Colonels and Majors traded service runs in set one as the Majors behind the serving of Mary Wilson erased a 16-11 lead to tie the game at 16. Centre would counter with a run of their own to retake a 21-17 lead. The Majors got kills from Lexus Andrews and Courtney Huie to take a run at the first set, but the Colonels forced two attack errors and won the set at 25-22.
Centre took the momenutm from the first set win to race out to a commanding second set lead. The Colonels hit an impressive .393 in the second set and own a nine-point lead through much of the second half to the set en route to a 25-15 win.
The Majors rebounded in the third set to force a fourth set with a 25-23 win. The Majors got service runs from Christina Tilton and Andrews before Centre made a charge towards the end of the set. The Majors called two strategic timeouts to end the Colonels' momentum and Millsaps got a kill from Courtney Huie to send the match to four.
The fourth set was back and forth through all 54 total points. Centre thought they had control of the set at 23-18 only to see the Majors storm back. Kills by Susannah Williams, Huie and Caroline McKey headlined the rally that tied the game at 25. The Majors fought off a total of six match points before the Colonels strung together two straight points to win 28-26.
The Majors had a balanced offensive effort with McKey, Huie and Andrews all with double-digit kills. They were predominantly set up by Taylor Ziegler, who had 43 helpers to go along with five kills of her own. The Majors also spread the wealth on digs, with five players in double figures, led by McKey's 27.
The Majors head to Berry for their 10 year volleyball celebration next Saturday. They will play the Vikings at noon central time and pick up a non-conference game versus Piedmont on Saturday at 2.
