MAJORS TOP PANTHERS IN RECORD-SETTING MATCH

Box Score

MT. BERRY, GA- The Millsaps Majors defeated the Birmingham Southern Panthers in record-setting fashion on Friday night in the Southern Athletic Association Quarterfinals.

The Majors won 25-15, 46-44, 23-25, 25-14 in the four-set victory. According to the NCAA Division-III record book, the 90-point second set is the longest in NCAA history regardless of division in the 25-point set era, besting the DI mark of 88 points (Manhattan d. Rider 45-43 in 2009). The second-set shattered the old record D-III of "only" 82 points between SUNY Genseco and Rochester (NY) in 2011. Millsaps broke Rochester's record for most points in a four-set match with 119. The 119 total points is tied for the second-most all-time in Divsion-III in the 25-point set system regardless of sets played. Needless to say, the match was one for the ages.

The Millsaps took care of business in normal fashion in set one, turning a 14-13 lead to a 25-14 win. The Majors were led by Mary Wilson who had a pair of service aces and great service runs by Wilson, Taylor Ziegler and Christina Tilton

In the second set, the Majors erased a three-point Panther lead to set up the record-setting night. The Majors and Panthers were tied at every step of the way from 23-all to 44-all, trading points every step of the way. Needing to win by two, the teams traded barbs and fought off numerous set points. Caroline McKey gave the Majors a 45-44 lead and Lexus Andrews closed the record book with an ace to make it 46-44.

Still needing to win one more set to advance, the Majors charged back from down 21-16 in the third to tie the match. Defense set the tone for the Majors all night and Susannah Williams had one of her four block assists to help tie the match. However, the Panthers weren't done yet and rallied back for a 25-23 set win.

The Majors hit the afterburners in set four, turning a 10-all tie to a 25-14 win. The Majors' defense was the difference in the match and in the fourth-set run. The Majors had seven total blocks in the game and helped force 35 Panther errors.

First team All-SAA member Caroline McKey's 19 kills on the evening and her 24 digs were a match highs. SAA Honorable mention Lexus Andrews also registered a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. SAA Honorable mention Taylor Ziegler had a double-double as well with 27 assists and 16 digs.

The Majors will look to build off their record-setting night when they take on top-seed Berry in tomorrow's conference semi-finals.
