Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors' volleyball team got 2014 off to a good start with a clean sweep of the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Lady Knights.
The Majors won 25-15, 25-22 and 25-13. Millsaps swatted out 41 kills, led by Lexus Andrews' 15. The Majors were quite efficient, hitting at a .235 percent clip, while limiting SUNO to a meager .033 hitting percentage.
Millsaps turned a back-and-forth first set into a comfortable 10-point win thanks to a nice service run by freshman Ashley Zamjahn. She had a five-point run that included an ace and a Peyton Mansell kill finished off the first set.
The Majors jumped out early in set two, grabbing an 8-3 lead. Mary Wilson had the hot service hand to start before a pair of runs by SUNO closed the gap. After a back-and-forth middle of the set, the Majors got mini service runs from Caroline McKey and Wilson and solid defense to close out the second set at 25-22.
SUNO grabbed an early third set lead, but the Majors got an ace and kill from McKey to level the match at six all. Millsaps turned on the afterburners after trading the next 10 points, thanks to a hot service hand from Presley Stoltzfus. The freshman rolled off six straight points to open up a double-digit Millsaps' lead. Zamjahn would close out the set on serve thanks to a pair of SUNO attack errors and the Majors walked away with the sweep.
The Majors will face off with the Lyon Scots this evening in the finale of the Belhaven Classic opening day. First serve is at seven.
