Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors finished off their second sweep of the day on Friday, defeating the Lyon College Scots 26-24, 25-13, 25-19 on Friday night in the Hangar Dome.
Senior Caroline McKey led the way with a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, both team highs. Lexus Andrews also chipped in a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Taylor Zeigler and Mary Wilson each had double-digit assists to lead the Majors with 20 and 19, respectfully.
The Majors shook off a bit of a slow start in set one, fighting back from a pair of three-point deficits, including one at 19-16. Millsaps stormed out of a timeout to win back the serve and got a run from freshman Ashley Zamjahn to grab a 21-19 lead. The teams would trade points and be tied at both 22, 23, and 24 before a Regan Riddle kill would end the see-saw battle and put the Majors up a set.
Zamjahn and Andrews got the Majors off to a scorching second-set start with each getting four-point service runs as Millsaps jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Kills by McKey and Andrews and an ace from senior Christina Tilton put the Majors up double-digits and they never looked back. A McKey ace and a pair of errors from the Scots put the second set in the books.
Another quick start for the Majors put the Majors up 11-4 as a block and kill from freshman Rachel Jackson helped get the Majors rolling. A pair of Payton Mansell kills put Millsaps up 20-12 and the Majors withstood a late Scot rally to finish off the sweep. A pair of Lexus Andrews' kills finished off the match and sent the Majors to 2-0.
The Majors will look to keep their hot start going in day two of the Belhaven/Millsaps Classic. Philander Smith out of the NAIA will take on the Majors at 10AM tomorrow in the Hangar Dome and SAA rilval Rhodes College will take on Millsaps in a non-conference match at 3PM.
