Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors volleyball team moved to 3-0 on the young season with their third straight-set win of the weekend, 25-13, 25-10, 25-16 over the Philander Smith Panthers.
The Majors got a balanced effort across the board in the Saturday morning match. Caroline McKey led the team with 10 kills but eight different Majors had at least two kills in the three sets. Mary Wilson (pictured) and Taylor Zeigler split the assists with Wilson picking up 17 and Zeigler 16. McKey and Lexus Andrews led a stout defense, with McKey picking up three block assists and Andrews a team-high 15 digs.
Andrews got the Majors off to a quick start in set one, winning 10 straight points on serve to bust open a 3-3 tie. A nice service run from Ashley Zamjahn helped set up a Jessie Allen kill and finish off the first set.
Millsaps made quick work of the second set, Zeigler raced the Majors out to a 11-3 lead. A kill and a pair of aces down the stretch from Zamjahn closed out the second set in short order.
Millsaps was in control of the third set as well, never allowing the Panthers to get within six points after an initial back-and-forth start. Kills by Rachel Jackson and Lexus Andrews helped give the Majors some breathing room and a final tally from Sierra Burris closed out the set and put the Majors into the win column for the third time on the weekend.
Millsaps will look to continue their hot hand this afternoon as rival Rhodes College comes into the Hangar Dome for a non-conference match. First serve is at 3pm.
