Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors capped off a true, clean sweep of the Belhaven/Millsaps Classic with a 3-0 sweep of rival Rhodes College 25-23, 25-22, 25-13.
While the two teams are conference rivals, this did not count towards the league standings. Lexus Andrews led the charge with an impressive 23 digs to go with 10 kills and another double-double. Caroline McKey led the team with 14 kills while Ashley Zamjahn chipped in eight, nearly missing on a double-double of her own with 13 digs recorded.
Kills from seniors McKey and Payton Mansell finished off a nip-and-tuck first set that saw five ties and numerous lead changes. Millsaps shook off a late run from Rhodes to close the set, a key Lynx service error and kill from Andrews, set up the seniors to lock down the first set.
Runs were the theme of set two as each team answered lengthy runs with ones of their own to start the set. The Majors were up 4-0 and 7-4 but Rhodes battled back to knot the set at eight. The Majors once again looked to take control after a pair of Andrews' kills but Rhodes came back to tie the set at 17. Millsaps had one more run in the set that Rhodes could not answer. A 7-2 spurt put the Majors on the verge of a 2-0 lead and a kill from Andrews, set up by Mary Wilson closed out the set.
Set three was a one-sided affair as a lengthy McKey service run broke open a 6-6 tie, a pair of Lynx timeouts could not slow down the Majors who reeled off 11 of 13 points to take a commanding lead. Freshmen Rachel Jackson and Ashley Zamjahn helped keep the rally going with a pair of kills each. From there, Millsaps turned up the defense and closed out their fourth sweep of the weekend.
The Majors are back in action next weekend for the Millsaps Invite. On Friday night, the Majors will play host to Schreiner and Belhaven. First match starts at 3pm.
