Box Score CINCINNATI, OH- The Millsaps Majors picked up their first win of the season, scoring 27 unanswered points in a 30-22 win at the Mount Saint Joseph Lions on Saturday.
Zak Thrasher threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the comeback. The senior connected on 22 of 29 passes and hit three different Majors for a score.
The Lions scored first, taking advantage of a short field to score on an 11-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. The drive started at the Majors 24 yard line after a short punt.
Millsaps would respond, going on a 15-play 69-yard drive that ended with a 22 yard field goal from Beau Brady. Two key plays on the drive were third down conversions by Zak Thrasher, first hitting Matt Wahl on a 27-yard pass on 3rd and 11 then Tanner Menist for 15-yards on a 3rd and eight. The teams would trade punts to close out the first quarter with the Lions leading 7-3.
The Lions would extend their lead on a De'Marco Thomas touchdown run midway through the second quarter to make it 14-3 Lions. Once again, the Majors would answer a Lions' score with one of their own.
Millsaps responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 19-yard Thrasher touchdown pass to Trevor King. A pair of passes to Nick Glover and strong runs from Mike Barthelemy JR and Raphael Johnson were critical plays. The Majors would force a Mount Saint Joseph punt on the next drive, setting up a two-minute drill.
Millsaps would march 76 yards on seven plays in just over a minute to take the lead 17-14 on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Thrasher to Barthelemy. Tanner Menist and Beau Wells each had catches for over 20 yards to pace the no-huddle drive. Beau Brady's extra point was good as Millsaps took a 17-14 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Millsaps forced punts on Mount Saint Joseph's first two drives and put points on the board in their second drive of the half. Millsaps took advantage of a short Lion punt and used a 20-yard pass to Raphael Johnson to set up a goal-to-go situation. The drive stalled inside the Lion five as the Majors settled for a 22-yard Beau Brady field goal to make it 20-14.
Millsaps would extend the lead moments into the fourth quarter. Rashad Sims caught a quick out from Thrasher and turned it into a 73-yard touchdown reception to make it 27-14 Majors. The Majors' defense kept the pressure on Mount Saint Joseph, forcing turnovers on the next two Lion possessions. Benton Brown picked off a pass and Ty Patterson recovered a fumble that was forced by Alex Foust.
Following the fumble, Beau Brady chipped in another 22-yard field goal to give Millsaps a 16-point lead. The Lions would score a late touchdown, but following an on-side kick recovery, the Majors would kneel out the clock.
The Millsaps' defense limited the Lions to just 128 yards passing and 200 yards of total offense. Alex Jackson led the defense with eight tackles. Eric Martin had three tackles for loss and one of five Major sacks on the day, Semmes White another. Zach Bell had two more tackles for loss and broke up a pair of passes.
The win moves the Majors to 1-1 on the season heading into a bye week. Millsaps is next in action on September 27th when they travel to take on the East Texas Baptist Tigers.
