Box Score MT BERRY, GA- The Millsaps Majors dropped their first match of the year on Sunday, falling in four sets to the Berry Vikings.
The loss drops the Majors to 11-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. Caroline McKey led the Majors with a double double of 14 kills and 12 digs. Lexus Andrews and Ashley Zamjahn had eight and nine kills respectfully, just missing out on double-doubles themselves.
The Majors' erased an early seven-point Berry lead in set one, ripping off eight straight points on Zamjahn's serve to take a 13-12 lead. The teams would trade points until it was 18-all when Berry closed out the set on a 7-0 run to take an early lead in the match.
Andrews got the Majors off to a hot start in set two, serving a pair of aces en-route to five straight points and giving the Majors an early 8-3 lead. It would be a lead that the Majors would not relinquish. Berry got to within three on two occasions but kills by Andrews and Payton Mansell quieted the run. The Majors would win the second set 25-18.
The Vikings would win the third set on the back of a couple of mid-set runs. Berry outscored the Majors 8-3 midway through the set to build a comfortable lead and would win set three by an identical score of 25-18.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as the teams evenly split the first 30 points. Berry had a key run at 15-15, reeling off five straight points. Millsaps rallied and got within two after a pair of Courtney Huie kills. However, the Vikings stopped the rally and closed out the match to win set four 25-22.
The Majors are back in action next weekend in the friendly confines of the Hangar Dome as Rhodes and Hendrix come to town. The Rhodes Lynx are up first on Saturday, first serve is set for 2pm.
