Box Score JACKSON- The Millsaps Majors improved to 13-1 on the season after sweeping the Hendrix Warriors 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 on Sunday afternoon.
Balance once again proved key for the Majors, who also improved to 4-1 in the SAA. Caroline McKey once again led the Majors with nine kills but six Majors had at least four kills on Sunday. Defensively, Lexus Andrews had 14 digs to lead the Majors to go along with her seven kills, Presley Stoltzfus had 12 digs to lead four Majors who recorded double figure digs.
The Majors took control early in set one, using a McKey service run to take an early lead. Millsaps turned up the defensive intensity midway through the set, using a 10-4 run to blow the set open. The Majors held Hendrix to a negative first set hitting percentage and McKey had five of her nine kills in set one.
The Majors got early service runs from Mary Wilson and Ashley Zamjahn to take an early set two lead. Millsaps continued their strong defense and balanced play in building a 17-9 second set lead. Payton Mansell had a couple of key kills as did Lexus Andrews during the run. The Majors withstood a big comeback by the Warriors that saw them get to within three at 22-19. Taylor Zeigler had a service ace and a kill to finish off the set and put the Majors in control of the match.
Set three was a game of runs for both teams. Hendrix consistently held a two-point lead only to see the Majors battle back to tie in the early goings. Millsaps opened up a 15-10 lead off a strong Zeigler service, but the Warriors answered with five straight of their own to tie the match again at 15. A key block by Regan Riddle and Mansell put Millsaps up 19-15 after they responded with another run of their own. The Majors caught a break when Hendrix was called for serving out of order. The call gave the Majors a point and penalized the Warriors, two points later Riddle's kill put the final touches on the victory.
At 4-1, Millsaps sits atop the SAA standings with Berry and Birmingham Southern. They will continue their homestand next weekend with Centre and Sewanee coming to Jackson. The Colonels are up first on Saturday, first serve is set for 2pm.
