Box Score Jackson, MS – The Colonels of Centre College outscored the Majors 14-0 in the second half to earn a conference road win earlier today.
Centre, who improves to 4-2 on the year, made the 602-mile trip spanning nearly nine hours to Harper Davis Field. The Majors led early, but fell to Centre by a score of 31-17. The loss drops Millsaps to 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in SAA play.
After winning the coin toss, Centre elected to defer to the second half. The decision by the Colonels allowed the Majors offense to take the field first. After a three and out, the Majors gained some momentum on a 'muffed' punt from Centre.
The fumble on Ryan Grace's punt gave the Majors excellent field position just two minutes into the game. Majors starting quarterback, Chance Clowers, made the most of the early momentum by firing a pass to Beau Wells in the back of the end zone.
Clowers' four-yard touchdown pass to Wells opened up the scoring on the day, as the Majors led 6-0 in the first quarter.
After a Centre punt, the Majors again took over on offense leading early in the first quarter. However, the six play, 49-yard Majors drive was ended by the Colonels on an interception.
Following the interception, starting quarterback Heath Haden and the Colonels quickly scored their first touchdown of the day on a 28-yard pass to Blake Martin. The two play, 76-yard touchdown drive gave Centre a 7-6 lead.
The Majors needed an answer following Centre's score. They found one in junior receiver and kick returner Rashad Sims. Sims totaled 121 yards on kickoff returns for the contest. His most impressive return occurred following the Colonel's first score on a 69-yard run to the Centre twenty-yard line.
Millsaps used the positive momentum and field position to score on a quick four play, 20-yard drive that lasted 53 seconds. Sims finished off the scoring drive on a three-yard rush to the end zone. Beau Wells caught the two-point conversion pass from Clowers giving the Majors a 14-7 lead.
Both teams traded punts until starting Colonels kicker, Alex Ward, kicked a 22-yard field goal with two minutes left in the first quarter.
With the score 14-10, Millsaps stated their first turnover of the day on an interception from the hands of Jared Bullock. Bullock's interception gave the Majors excellent field position at the Centre 34-yard line.
Patrick McRaney finished off the five play, 29-yard drive by drilling a 22-yard field goal. McRaney's field goal gave the Majors a second half lead of 17-10.
After the Majors field goal, the game turned into a defensive struggle, as both teams traded punts for the majority of the second quarter. The game also turned into a battle for field position between the special team's units.
Late in the second quarter, Centre found the end zone on a quick one-play, 53-yard touchdown pass. Haden's second touchdown of the day was completed to Jake Johnson, which tied the score at 17-17.
Both teams left the field to regroup as the halftime festivities began. Today's halftime, however, proved to be more special than usual.
The Majors were excited to announce 'Sean Brewer Day' as part today's game. Sean, a Millsaps alum, played defensive lineman for the Majors from 1989-1992.
Recently, Sean was selected into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016. The Majors and National Football Foundation were proud to present Sean with the official Hall of Fame plaque at halftime during today's game.
Following the ceremonies at the intermission, both teams returned to the field of play for the second half.
The Colonels added their first score of the second period late in the third quarter. Heath Haden threw a lateral pass to Jake Johnson, who then threw to Haden for a trick play touchdown. The lateral pass finished off another quick scoring drive for the Colonels (two plays, 69-yards) as they led 24-17.
A Majors punt on the ensuing drive closed out the third quarter with the Colonels holding a 24-17 - one score lead.
On the opening drive of the fourth quarter, Centre added their fifth and final score of the day. Nolan Coulter finished off a seven play, 97-yard touchdown drive on a five-yard rush to the end zone.
Coulter's rushing touchdown closed out the scoring for the contest as Centre earned a 31-17 win. The Colonels defense forced three fourth quarter turnovers to seal the victory, which improves them to 4-2 on the year.
Chance Clowers led the Majors offensively by passing for 232 yards and a touchdown on 27 completions. Rashad Sims had a career day with a rushing touchdown, 161 yards receiving on 13 receptions, and 121 total yards on kick returns.
