Oglethorpe Holds off Hard Fought Rally by the Majors

Box Score Atlanta, GA – The Majors men's soccer team fell on the road earlier today to conference opponent Oglethorpe.

The Majors fought hard all game in spite of the tough circumstances and the difficult road environment.  However, the Stormy Petrels outlasted the Majors in overtime to win 3-2.

The win improves Oglethorpe to 9-2-1 (4-0) on the year while the Majors drop to 8-4 (2-2).  Fighting hard all game, the Majors came from behind to force overtime after trailing 2-1.  In overtime, Topher Marshall scored an unassisted goal off of a deflection to give Oglethorpe a 3-2 win.

Alex Bourland started the scoring for the contest by heading in a cross from SAA offensive player of the week Nico Roth.  Bourland's goal occurred just six minutes into the game and gave the Majors a 1-0 first half lead.

Oglethorpe answered twenty minutes later on an unassisted goal from Martijn Edelman.  Will Keegan followed Edelman's score with a goal of his own to give the Stormy Petrels a 2-1 halftime lead.

Down a goal, the Majors began the hard-fought, come from behind second half effort.  For nearly 40 minutes both teams remained scoreless.  That is, until Dimitiri Staursky scored his first goal of the season.

In the 81st minute, Staursky tied up the game on a header that found the back of the net.  The late second half goal ended the scoring in regulation, as both teams entered halftime.

Oglethorpe held off the Majors rally with a game-winning goal in the 98th minute.  The Majors however, with difficult circumstances surrounding Sunday's road game, fought hard to attempt another comeback win.

"I've never been more proud of our team's effort," Head Men's Soccer Coach Steve Voltz said.  "Extremely proud of our effort today, especially in a tough environment on the road."

The Majors will gain a chance to rest up and heal before the final two home games of the regular season next weekend.  Conference opponents Sewanee and Centre travel to Harper Davis Field for a pair of games next Friday and Sunday.

Next up for the Majors is a home game this Friday, Oct. 16th against Sewanee for a 7:30 start.
