Box Score Jackson, MS – The Majors volleyball team fell in a midweek conference matchup earlier tonight 3-0.
Traveling from Birmingham, Alabama, the Panthers of Birmingham Southern won the match in three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21. The loss drops the Majors to 10-11 (4-6) on the year while the Panthers improve to 18-3 (8-2).
Both teams equaled the same amount of kills in the first two sets with 12 a piece. Marjorie Ward led the Panthers in total kills with 13 while
Olivia Kleyer and
Courtney Huie led the Majors with nine each.
Trailing 21-16 in the first set, the Majors attempted a late rally, but fell short 25-20. Jeneva Salter scored the final point on an assist from Katie McCormak.
Ashley Zamjahn, again playing in the libero role for the Majors, led the way in digs for the match with 36.
Millsaps started the second set with a great deal of momentum as they held an early 12-8 lead. The Panthers, however, came back to draw the set at 16-16. Following the tie, the Panthers scored seven out of the next eight points to lead 23-18. Birmingham Southern never looked back as they took a 2-0 lead over the Majors with a 25-19 second set win.
The third, intense set featured three different ties and multiple lead changes. Holding a late 23-19 lead, the Panthers held off another rally from the Majors to win the set 25-21.
The Majors will look to rebound for a pair of final regular season home games this weekend. Next up for Millsaps is a conference home game this Saturday, Oct. 17 against Centre.
Saturday's game will be Senior Day for the Majors, as they take on the Colonels for a 2:00 pm start.
