Majors Complete Regular Season on Three Game Winning Streak

Box Score Memphis, TN – The Millsaps men's soccer team completed regular season play with a conference victory over Rhodes in Memphis, Tennessee earlier today.

The Majors started today's contest firing on all cylinders with three first half goals.  Another goal early in the second half completed the convincing win for Millsaps as they earned a 4-1 victory over Rhodes.  Not only did today's win give the Majors their 11th win of the season, but it also guarantees a playoff game next week at Harper Davis Field.  The Majors finish the regular season second overall in the Southern Athletic Association with today's victory as well.

Three minutes into the game, Nico Roth finished off a pass from Alex Bourland to give the Majors an early 1-0 lead.  Just 10 minutes later, Alex Bourland scored an unassisted goal to give the Majors one of their best starts of any game this season.

"Today we came out as good as we have all season," Head Men's Soccer Coach Steve Voltz said.  "Rhodes is a good side, we knew we had to play well and create shots early on to have a chance to win."

The Majors early offensive pressure proved to be effective as they outshot the Lynx 16-3 in the first half.  Overall, the Majors outshot Rhodes 21-10 for the contest.  In save totals, Jonathan Huebbe and Charlie Edwards combined for three saves on 10 shots from the Lynx.

Bourland's career day continued with another goal in the first half on a pass from Taylor Hayes.  Bourland buried his shot to give the Majors a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Lukas Elmhammar added another goal early in the second half to complete the scoring for Millsaps on the day.  Elmhammar's unassisted goal occurred just six minutes into the second half of play as the Majors closed out the final game of the regular season.

"I thought we performed well defensively as we focused more on our defensive efforts in the second half of play," Coach Voltz said.  "Today was a good team win, everybody got a chance to play against a good team in Rhodes."

Today's win gives the Majors a three game winning streak to close out the regular season.  Millsaps will look to use the positive momentum moving into the playoffs next week.  As the second overall seed, the Majors will host Hendrix (the seventh seed) next weekend at Harper Davis Field.

"I'm happy for our guys to get a big win today and to be able to host next week," Coach Voltz said.  "Now we have to go out and prove our worth in the playoffs."

The Majors, who improve to 11-4 (5-2) on the year, will look to use their recent success for the playoffs next week.  Next up for Millsaps is a home playoff game this Saturday against Hendrix College.
