Box Score Jackson, MS – The Millsaps men's soccer team began the 2015 SAA postseason tournament with a victory over Hendrix College earlier today.
The Majors scored six goals to continue their season in front of a home crowd at Harper Davis Field. Riding a three-game winning streak to close out the regular season, the Majors started with a great deal of offensive pressure to lead early. Millsaps moves on to the semi finals of the SAA tournament as they won today's contest 6-2.
The Majors relied on SAA Offensive Player of the Week,
Alex Bourland to get the offensive pressure started in the first half. Just two minutes into the game, Bourland completed an unassisted goal on a great drive into the Warriors 18-yard box. Bourland completed this run into the box with a goal, as his previous attempt just a minute earlier hit the post.
"I thought the guys came out really sharp," Head Men's Soccer Coach
Steve Voltz said. "Having a shot off the post just ten seconds into the game really gave us some positive offensive momentum."
Hendrix responded well to the early goal by firing a number of well-timed shots at starting Majors goalkeeper,
Johnathan Huebbe.
"Hendrix did a good job regaining control of the game after the first goal," Coach Voltz said. "Johnathan made a tremendous save early on to keep the 1-0 lead for us."
The game remained back and forth until the 36th minute.
Matt Crooker finished a string of beautiful passes from
Alex Bourland and Nico Roth to give the Majors a 2-0 lead. Millsaps was not done as two minutes later
Taylor Hayes scored on another pair of well-timed passes from Bourland and Roth.
With a 3-0-halftime lead, the Majors never looked back. They continued their offensive pressure into the second half by scoring in the 47th minute. Nico Roth drew a penalty in the Hendrix 18-yard box, as
Lukas Elmhammar was called upon to increase the Majors lead. Elmhammar drilled the penalty shot and gave the Majors a commanding 4-0 lead.
Alex Bourland and Nico Roth added two more goals in the second half to lead 6-0. Holding the 6-0 lead, the Majors were able to play a number of different players for the contest.
"We never thought we were out of harms way tonight, especially against a good side like Hendrix," Coach Voltz said. "I thought the guys coming in did a good job, Hendrix battled well, tonight was a good playoff game."
With the 6-2 win, the Majors advance to the semi finals of the SAA Tournament, which will continue next weekend. Additionally, the Majors will host the rest of the games for the conference tournament at Harper Davis Field here in Jackson, Mississippi.
"Happy for the guys that they get to play again, especially at home," Head Coach
Steve Voltz said. "It doesn't get any easier from here, but we're excited for the opportunity to continue playing."
The Majors will be back in playoff action this Friday, Nov. 6th against Centre for a 7:30 pm start.
