Box Score Cleveland, MS – The Millsaps women's soccer team fell to Delta State University in a nonconference matchup earlier today.
A six-goal second half gave Delta State the win to improve to 3-6-1 on the year. The loss drops the Majors to 2-9-1 on the year, as today's game marked the first game in a series of four road matchups for Millsaps.
The first half saw no scoring, but it was not from a lack of shots, as both teams combined for 17 total in the first half. Starting goalkeeper
Olivia Gattuso recorded seven saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Delta State, however, increased their offensive pressure in the second period, leading to six goals. Shannon Thomas added the first score of the game on an assist from Shelby Neil in the 59thminute. Tais Cotta added another Delta State score 12 minutes later to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead.
The Majors would answer on a penalty shot in the 71st minute. Senior
Molly Ambrose scored the penalty kick goal to cut the Delta State lead in half.
Delta State again answered with two quick goals in the 74th and 75th minutes to reclaim control of the game (Lakyn Cryder and Taylor Guess). From there, the Statesmen never looked back, as Taylor Guess and Kellie Hendle added two more late scores to give Delta State a 6-1 win.
The Majors will look to rebound for this weekend's slate of conference games. The four-game road trip continues at Berry and Oglethorpe this weekend.
