Memphis, TN – The Millsaps Football Team earned their second conference win of the season by defeating Rhodes College earlier today 31-21.
Today's win marks the final game of the season for the Majors as they complete the year with a two-game winning streak.
Ty Proctor and
Chance Clowers both threw for a touchdown as the Majors outscored the Lynx 14-7 in the second half to solidify their third win of the season.
After winning the opening coin toss and deferring to the second half, Rhodes was able to get on the board first after forcing a first quarter turnover in Millsaps territory. Rhodes running back Alex Chavez finished off the scoring drive on a nine-yard rush to the end zone. The eight-play, 33-yard scoring drive gave the Lynx a 7-0 first quarter lead.
After the early Lynx score,
Chance Clowers and the Majors offense answered. Millsaps junior wide receiver
Rashad Sims hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Clowers to give the Majors their first score of the day. Patrick Mcraney added the extra point to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter.
McRaney was called upon to score again in the second quarter. After both teams traded punts,
Ty Proctor orchestrated a long nine-play drive into Rhodes territory. The Lynx defense, however, held strong to force a Majors field goal.
Patrick McRaney's 25-yard field goal split the uprights to give Millsaps their first lead of the day.
The Lynx would answer with a long scoring drive of their own. PJ Settles led Rhodes on an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive to retake the lead. Settles completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Beau Egan to cap off the long drive that nearly took two minutes off the clock.
Settles touchdown pass occurred late in the second quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, the Majors had the ball at their own 35-yard line with only 18 seconds left in the half. From there, Head Football Coach
Aaron Pelch drew up a perfect, aggressive play to retake the lead.
After a
Raphael Johnson run the Majors took a timeout with 11 seconds left.
Ty Proctor then fired a long pass to
Rashad Sims for 63 yards. The catch and run by Sims ended in the end zone, giving the Majors the lead and perhaps the highest amount of halftime momentum they've experience all season.
The Majors used the momentum to their advantage by adding to their lead in the third quarter.
Andrew Warren finished off a long 13-play, 61-yard drive on a one-yard dash to the end zone. Warren's third quarter touchdown was set up by a set of solid defensive stops by the Majors defense.
Collectively as a team, Millsaps had the advantage going into the fourth quarter leading 24-14.
The Lynx, needing a quick fourth quarter score, cut the Majors lead to three points with an eight-play, 63-yard scoring drive. The Rhodes defense then made a huge play by blocking a Majors field goal attempt.
The Majors defense, however, answered with a turnover.
Chandler Loy forced a Michael Shield fumble halfway through fourth quarter, which was recovered by
Drew Ward.
Loy and Ward's big defensive play gave the Majors their best field position of the contest. Starting the drive at the Rhodes four-yard line, the Majors called upon
Raphael Johnson to increase their lead.
Johnson rushed into the end zone to cap off the four-play, four-yard scoring drive, which gave Millsaps a 10-point fourth quarter lead.
The Majors defense then removed all doubt by forcing another fumble on a
Pierce Cotton sack as time expired. The final defensive stand by the Majors solidified the 31-21 victory as they complete the season with two straight wins.
Offensively,
Ty Proctor led the Majors with 164 yards passing on seven completions and a touchdown (16 attempts).
Chance Clowers also had a touchdown with 95 yards passing on eight completions (17 attempts).
Raphael Johnson rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight week with 117 on 26 attempts and a touchdown.
Rashad Sims led the Majors in receiving with 169 yards on six receptions and two touchdowns. Sims' career day helped the Majors earn the win as
Jared Bullock,
Eric Martin and
Javis Aultman led in defensive tackles.
Collectively, Bullock, Martin and Aultman totaled 23 tackles as four different Majors forced a fumble. Peirce Cotton,
Alex Foust,
Chandler Loy, and Zach Borne all forced fumbles to help Millsaps hold the Lynx to seven second half points.
The Majors finish their season with two straight wins in SAA play. Overall, Millsaps completes the year with a record of 3-7. With the final two wins of the season, the Majors have a great deal of positive momentum heading into next season, as they will look to improve and begin the building process for 2016.
