Box Score Jackson, MS – The Majors men's soccer team ended their second home game of the season much like the first, by finishing in overtime.
Only this game proved to be a stark contrast to the tough season home opener, as Lukas Elhmhammar's goal just 80 seconds into the first overtime period gave the Majors a thrilling 2-1 win over Austin College.
"Emotionally a very important win for us here tonight after having lost the first home game in overtime," Head Soccer Coach Steve Voltz said. "We didn't have our best focus tonight, but we grinded out a tough win against a great team in Austin College."
After the two-game road trip last weekend, the Majors returned home for a much-anticipated matchup against Austin College. The Majors controlled the tempo early on, as they led the 'Roos' in first half shot attempts 11-4.
The talk of the first half, however, was the opening goal scored by junior midfielder, Javier Garcia.
Senior defender, Daniel Staursky set-up the brilliant goal by sending a free kick into the Austin College 18-yard box. Senior forward, Nico Roth headed the free kick to Garcia, who rocketed a volleyed shot into the back of the net. The goal got the scoring started as the Majors led 1-0 at halftime.
Following the intermission, the Roos of Austin College were able to answer as Thomas Quick scored the equalizer on a through pass from Phillip Le.
Quick's goal was the only of the second half despite the Majors outshooting the Roos 10-6. The two teams went into overtime-tied 1-1 in the intense contest.
The match proved to be another intense home game for the Majors. However, just 80 seconds into the first overtime period, senior midfielder Lukas Elmhammar erased all doubts by scoring the game winning goal. The goal marks Elmhammar's second of the season, as Matt Crooker got the assist on the winning score.
Saturday's game marks the first win at home for the Majors, as they fought hard to close out the heavily competitive back-and-forth game.
"Austin College is a quality team, but we showed a lot of character after giving up a goal for the tie." Coach Voltz said. "Now we have to come out tomorrow and get ready for another great challenge in less than 24 hours."
Overall, the Majors outshot Austin College 21-10 and contained the Roo's highly effective offensive attack.
"The defense deserves a lot of credit tonight for containing the top attackers of Austin College," Coach Voltz said. "I'm happy for our players and for the overall effort in grinding out a tough win tonight."
The Majors take the field tomorrow at 4:00 pm for another home matchup, as Centenary College travels to Harper Davis Field.
