Box Score Jackson, MS – The Majors men's soccer team finished the weekend of play with a 2-1 win over Centenary College earlier today.
The win marks the fourth straight win of the season and the second straight victory at Harper Davis Field. The Majors improved to 4-1, as they pulled out a tough win over Centenary.
With an emotionally draining overtime game being played less than 24 hours prior to today's kickoff, the Majors were looking for an early boost.
They got that boost from senior defender Daniel Staursky, who headed in a Nat Edwards corner kick halfway through the first half of play. Staursky, who is known as an anchor in the defensive backfield, traveled into Centenary territory to knock the header in, giving the Majors a 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting Centenary 11-1 in the first half, the Majors led 1-0 at halftime.
Today's game marked arguably the most physical of the season for the Majors, as both teams combined for a total of 36 fouls.
In the second half, senior forward Nico Roth attempted to play a long ball put into the box, but was fouled from behind. Fortunately for the Majors, the foul occurred inside Centenary's 18-yard box, leading to a penalty kick.
Senior midfielder, Lukas Elmhammar stepped up to take the eventual game-deciding penalty kick. Elmhammar's shot rocketed into the back of the net giving the Majors a 2-0 lead with over 40 minutes left to play.
Elmhammar's goal was the last of the game for Millsaps, but it did not close out the scoring on the day.
A late shot by Ivann Amaya found the back of the net, which led to a 2-1 score with seven minutes left in the game. The Majors were able to hold of Centenary in the final intense minutes of the game, as they improved to a record of 4-1.
Making his first start of 2015, senior goalkeeper Charlie Edwards also earned his first win of the year. The efforts of Edwards and the defense helped give the Majors the 2-1 win.
The Majors finish the weekend with two wins over Austin College and Centenary College.
Next up will be a home game under the lights of Harper Davis Field this Saturday, Sept. 19th against Covenant at 7:00 pm.
