Great Team Effort Leads to Majors First Win

Box Score

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps women's soccer team finished a successful weekend at home by earning their first victory of the season earlier today.

The 1-0 win over Centenary College marks the first regular-season win for the Majors, as Ellie Dennis scored on a great cross from Maria Welch.

Dennis scored her first goal of the season on the assist from Welch, which marked her first of the year as well.  The corner kick score occurred late in the first half of play, as the Majors set the tempo early by outshooting Centenary 8-1 in the first half.

As the first half concluded, the Majors led 1-0 in a game that looked similar to the one played less than 24 hours ago.  The weekend's opening game against Austin College ended in an intense tie after 110 minutes of play.

Given the circumstances, the Majors knew the second half would be a tough, hard fought 45 minutes of play.

The Majors were more than up to the challenge as they continued to lead Centenary in second half shot totals 7-6.  Defensively, the Majors held Centenary to no scores on just seven total shots.

Perhaps the most impressive play of the second half, however, was the save from sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Gattuso.  With only minutes left to play, Centenary forward, Maddy Brown broke through on a late scoring chance that could have been the match's equalizing goal.

Gattuso, however, shut down the breakaway attempt by making a great save, securing a victory for the Majors.

Today included several milestones for Millsaps women's soccer.  In addition to being the first win of the season, it also marked the first career win as a Major for Head Women's Soccer Coach Sarah Arsenault.  Arsenault, in her first season with Millsaps, coached the Majors to a great team win by defeating Centenary 1-0.

The Majors will look to use today's positive momentum moving forward, as their next game kicksoff this Wednesday, Sept. 13th against Alcorn State at 4:30 pm.
