Box Score Jackson, MS – The Majors volleyball team capped off successful weekend hosting the Millsaps Invite by going 3-1 in four games.
Today featured matchups against Texas Tyler and Belhaven University, as the Majors split the pair of games to close out the weekend.
Returning to the Hangar Dome at Millsaps College proved to be a huge boost for the Majors. The Majors started the season at 1-4 with the five first games being played on the road. The Millsaps Invite was a welcome sign for Majors volleyball, as the weekend would offer four straight home games over two days.
The Majors began the day by playing the Patriots of Texas Tyler. Having swept their two opponents the previous day, UT Tyler traveled to the Hangar Dome with a great deal of momentum.
The Patriots got out to a fast start in the first game by jumping to an early 7-3 lead. From there, the Majors climbed back into the game, as UT Tyler called a timeout with the score 13-8. The Patriots, however, were able to close out the game with a convincing 25-14 first set win.
In the second set, the Majors were the ones starting quick as they began the game with a lead of 7-4. After the fast start, the Majors capitalized on the mistakes of the Patriots by going on a 10-point run to lead 17-5. The Majors never looked back as they won in the second set 25-15.
After trailing 24-19 in the third set, the Majors were able to mount a comeback, but fell short 25-23. The Patriots closed out the fourth and final set 25-14, ending the hard fought game.
The Patriots totaled 52 kills in the early match, as Millsaps totaled 45 kills.
The second match of the day featured a local rivalry matchup between Belhaven University and Millsaps College. Arguably the most competitive and intense game of the tournament, the Majors won in a heavily contested four sets.
The first set began the back-and-forth game as the two teams tied three separate times en route to a Millsaps 25-21 win. Millsaps convincingly won the second set 25-9, as they jumped out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back.
Belhaven began their comeback efforts in the third set by erasing a 2-5 deficit to win 25-22. The fourth and most intense set of the day included five separate ties between the Majors and Blazers. Going into the final points of the match, the two teams were tied 23-23. Having to win by two, the Majors needed a couple of points to win the game.
With a record crowd watching the heavily contested final points of the game, the Majors pulled out a close win 27-25.
The win improves the Majors to a record of 4-5 as they finish the weekend win a winning record of 3-1.
The Majors won their first two home games over the weekend, as they hope to use the positive momentum going into conference play next week.
Next up for the Majors is a road game opening up conference play against Birmingham-Southern Sept. 16th at 6:00 pm.
