Box Score Birmingham, AL – The Majors men's soccer team capped off a positive weekend by defeating Wilmington College earlier today 4-1.
The win improves the Majors to a record of 2-1 in the young season as they went 2-0 over the weekend road trip to Birmingham, Alabama.
A rare, but welcomed 'own goal' got the scoring started on the day as a shot from senior forward, Nico Roth, deflected off a defender and found the back of the net. The shot was destined for goal as the deflection off of Roth's shot set the tone for the game just seven minutes into the match.
The Majors scored again quickly as Javier Garcia scored on a beautiful cross from Steven Chrobok in the 23rd minute. The half ended with the Majors leading 2-0 as head coach Steve Voltz was satisfied with the fast start.
"We were much more efficient in our scoring to start out the game," Coach Voltz said. "Overall we were happy to get a fast start, especially playing a good team in Wilmington."
The two goals in the first half got the Majors out to a positive start. However, the highlight of the match was Taylor Hayes' goal in the 62nd minute. Nico Roth had the assist as Hayes rocketed a shot into the back of the net, giving the Majors a 3-0 lead.
"That was a goal worthy of ESPN," Coach Voltz said. "I really only saw two things on that play, Taylor's foot hitting the ball and then the ball hitting the back of the net it was hit so well."
Nico Roth added another goal on the day, as he put in a cross-delivered from Matt Crooker in the 68th minute. The Majors led 4-0, as Wilmington College scored the final goal of the game in the 77th minute (Martennson assist from Asteberg) resulting in a final score of 4-1.
The solid win improves the Majors to a record of 2-1, as today marks the second straight victory on the road.
"It was a good weekend for us," Coach Voltz said. "There are some things to fine tune as we lost focus a bit in the 2nd half, but overall we're happy with the way we played this weekend."
The Majors return home this week for a pair of weekend games at Harper Davis Field.
First up will be a Saturday night game against UT Austin Sept. 12th at 7:00 pm followed by a 4:00 pm kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 13thagainst Centenary College.
