Majors Women's Soccer Falls in Home Opener

Box Score

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps women's soccer team fell in their home opener played earlier today at Harper Davis Field.

Despite the hard fought effort in the extreme Mississippi heat, the Majors lost 3-0 to the Eagles of Asbury University.

The first half of play only saw only one goal as Mia Wiersema scored on a cross from Laura Mills 15 minutes into the period.  The goal gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead as the two teams went into halftime.

For shot totals, the two teams were relatively even in the first half as Asbury had six and Millsaps had four.  For saves, sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Gattuso had four in the first half, including a save on a breakaway attempt by the Eagles.

In the second half, the Eagles were able to score off of a deflected cross from Teryn Wright in the 67th minute.  The goal gave Asbury a 2-0 as they scored one more late in the second half (Shae Miller unassisted) to win 3-0.

The Eagles finished the day with 15 total shots as the Majors finished with a total of 7.  The win improves the Eagles to 3-2 on the season as the Majors drop to 0-3.

The Majors have a series of home games to look forward to this weekend as they play UT-Austin and Centenary.

The first game is set to kickoff at 5:00 pm this Saturday, Sept. 12th at Harper Davis Field against UT Austin.
