Mount Berry, GA - The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team earned their third straight win with a conference victory over Berry earlier today by a score of 56-53.
Today's intense, competitive contest featured 14 lead changes and seven different ties as the Majors earned their eight win of the season. Now at 8-6, the Millsaps Women's Basketball Team improves to 2-1 in conference after three road matchups to start SAA play. The conference itself currently has four teams tied for first at 2-1 in SAA play and four others in second at 1-2, making this the most competitive start to the SAA in its fourth year of play. Today's victory also ties the longest win streak of the season for the Majors as
Kala-Jewel Freeman and
Kasi Matthews led Millsaps with 16 points each.
The Majors held a slight, 29-25 halftime lead by shooting 10-26 (38 percent) from the field and 4-10 (40 percent) on three pointers in the first 20 minutes of play. The Vikings, however, took back the lead with a 7-4 run to start the third period.
Millsaps answered the Vikings run, which began a back-and-forth second half that came down to the final seconds. Holding a three-point lead with only seconds remaining in regulation, Millsaps needed one final defensive stop. Berry attempted a game tying three-pointer as time expired, which was no good - sealing the dramatic eighth win of the year for the Majors.
Millsaps earned today's team win through a continued effort to earn points in the paint. The Majors outscored the Vikings 30-16 for points in the paint and edged Berry 15-5 in second chance points. The depth of Millsaps also contributed to the win as the Majors bench outscored Berry 56-22.
In scoring totals,
Kasi Matthews and
Kala-Jewel Freeman both led Millsaps with virtually identical stat lines - 16 points, four assists and seven rebounds.
Braxton Thomas finished with nine points while
Kim Klunk totaled seven points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Overall the Majors shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field and 37.5 percent (6-16) on three pointers while Berry finished shooting 34.8 percent (16-46) from the field and 35 percent (7-20) on three pointers.
The Majors will finally return home for conference play next weekend after a six-game road trip that spanned from Las Vegas to Birmingham and most recently, Georgia. Next up for the Millsaps Women's Basketball Team is a rematch against Birmingham Southern this Saturday, Jan. 16th. Saturday's conference home opener from the Hanger Dome is set to tip off at 3:00 pm.
