Women's Basketball Drops Conference Home Opener

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team fell in their conference home opener to Birmingham Southern by a score of 60-49.
 
With tonight's victory, Birmingham Southern improves to 3-1 in conference play and ends one of the most current and longest active streaks in Millsaps Athletics.  Prior to tonight's matchup, the Majors had won 30 straight home games in the regular season – last defeat occurring in 2012.  The 60-49 Panthers' win ends the streak, but Millsaps, stays over .500 on the year with a record of 8-7 (2-2 in conference play).
 
The Majors attempted to comeback in tonight's contest by drawing the game even seven different times, but the Panthers held on by outscoring Millsaps 29-23 in the second half.  Millsaps led in second chance points (16-4), points off turnovers (13-11) and bench points (10-8) while the Panthers led for points in the paint (26-18) and fast break points (4-2).
 
After holding a five-point, halftime lead, Birmingham Southern led 41-32 with four minutes left in the third quarter.  From there, the Majors mounted their biggest comeback of the night by going on an 8-0 run into the fourth quarter. Birmingham Southern, however, answered the third quarter run by outscoring Millsaps 19-9 in the final 10 minutes of play – securing their 13th win of the season.
 
In shot totals, seniors Beverly Holmes and Miah Brooks led the Majors with 11 points each.  Kasi Matthews and Braxton Thomas also equaled in point totals with seven while Kim Klunk finished with six.  Overall, the Majors finished 18-59 (30.5%) from the field and 5-20 (25%) on three pointers while the Panthers went 21-41 (51.2%) on field goals and 4-18 (22.2%) on three pointers.
 
The Majors will look to rebound with a couple of home conference games next weekend.  First up for the Millsaps Women's Basketball Team is a matchup against Sewanee next Friday, Jan. 22nd.  Tip off against the Tigers from the Hangar Dome is set for 6:00 pm.
