Conway, AR – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team fell to Hendrix in overtime earlier tonight by a score of 66-63.
Tonight's road matchup begins a four-game road trip for Millsaps, as they now drop to 10-8 (4-3) on the year. The Warriors, who are now in first place in the Southern Athletic Association, move to 15-3 (6-1). Senior
Miah Brooks nearly earned another double-double by totaling a season high 24 points with nine rebounds. After trailing early in the first half, Millsaps came from behind to tie the game, but eventually fell in overtime.
The Warriors started the game fast by outscoring the Majors 20-9 in the first quarter. Hendrix scored the first 13 points of the game before the Majors mounted an early comeback. The second quarter, which was stark in contrast to the first for Millsaps, featured an 11-0 Majors run.
Down 27-15 with 5:03 left in the first half, the Majors defense did not allow another Hendrix basket to only trail 27-26 at halftime. The Majors' 11-0 second period run began a back and forth game between the two teams, which featured three ties and four different lead changes.
The Majors led the close, intense second half by three points with 35 seconds remaining in the game. On the ensuing possession, Hendrix tied the contest on a Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler three-pointer. The Majors had a final chance to win the game in regulation, but the late three-pointer fell short.
In overtime, the Majors led early 61-59 on a pair of baskets from
Beverly Holmes and
Miah Brooks. Hendrix, however, would again answer with a pair of three-pointers by Anna King and Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler. Leading 65-61 with 1:02 left in the game, the Warriors made their remaining free throws to eventually seal the win.
Senior
Miah Brooks led the Majors with an outstanding 24-point performance. Brooks' efforts helped the Majors outscore Hendrix for points in the paint 38-20 as well.
Kala-Jewel Freeman also totaled 11 points on the night while
Keyerra Jordan had a individual season high 10 points.
In shooting totals, the Majors went 24-61 (39.3%) from the field and 1-11 on three pointers while the Warriors went 21-50 (42%) from the field and 9-20 (45%) on three pointers. Millsaps led in points off turnovers (20-12), bench points (21-19) and second chance points (10-9).
The Majors will look to regroup with another conference game on the road later this weekend. Next up for Millsaps Women's Basketball is a matchup against Rhodes. Tip off from Memphis, Tennessee is set for this Sunday, Jan. 31st at 1:00 pm.
