Memphis, TN – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team earned their 11
th win of the season with a 54-44 victory over Rhodes earlier today.
The Majors never trailed in today's contest, as they now improve to 5-3 in conference play. Rhodes falls to 10-9 and 4-4 in conference play while the Majors stay in third place in the SAA standings with the win. Today's contest continues a four-game road trip for Millsaps as three Majors scored in double digits to help earn the ten-point win.
Millsaps started the game fast by leading 20-9 early in the second quarter. The Lynx would answer with a 6-0 run heading into halftime to only trail by two possessions. Both teams made scoring difficult by playing effective defense throughout the game. Collectively, the Lynx and Majors combined for 44 total turnovers.
The Majors defense also held Rhodes to just 28% shooting from the field and 22% on three-pointers in the first half.
Rhodes would tie the game 30-30 early in the third quarter, but the Majors answered with an 11-2 run to take the lead – and never looked back. Leading by eight with less than 60 seconds left in the game, the Majors made all their remaining free throws to eventually win 55-44.
In shooting totals, three different Majors scored in double digits.
Beverly Holmes led the way with 13 points on some effective three-point shooting while
Braxton Thomas finished with 10.
Kim Klunk also had a near double-double. Her 12 points and eight rebounds helped the Majors outscore Rhodes for points in the paint 24-18.
Both teams finished with nearly identical shooting totals, as Millsaps finished 18-56 (32%) from the field and 4-18 (22%) on three pointers while Rhodes went 18-57 (31%) from the field and 4-17 (23%) on three pointers. The Majors also outscored Rhodes in points off turnovers (29-21), bench points (19-10) and second chance points (15-14).
The Majors will continue their road trip further next weekend as they travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to face the Tigers. Tip off against the Tigers from Juhan Gymnasium is set for next Friday, Feb. 5
th at 6:00 pm.
