Birmingham, AL – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team fell in their conference opener earlier today to Birmingham Southern by a score of 68-54.
The Majors continued their six-game road trip after a two-game stint in Las Vegas earlier last week. Today marked the opening game in Southern Athletic Association play for Millsaps as they traveled to Birmingham Southern to face the Panthers. Birmingham Southern trailed only once en route to their 10th straight win of the year. The Panthers continued their unbeaten season by shooting 44 percent from the field (22-50) and 41 percent on three pointers (10-24).
Millsaps freshman forward
Braxton Thomas led the Majors in scoring with 19 points and six rebounds. Thomas continues her excellent play as she was named to the D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team last week. Junior forward
Kim Klunk led the Majors in rebounds with nine while
Miah Brooks and
Kala-Jewel Freeman both finished with five rebounds each.
Both teams were equal in points off the bench with 10 each while the Panthers led in points off turnovers (26-22), points in the paint (18-6) and fast break points (4-2). The Majors led the contest in second chance points by outscoring Birmingham Southern 15-7.
Today's loss drops the Majors to 5-6 (0-1), as they will look to quickly rebound for another road game tomorrow. Millsaps travels to LaGrange, Georgia to face LaGrange College tomorrow, Jan. 4th. Monday's tip off from LaGrange will be at 5:00 pm EST.
