Men's Soccer wins big conference game at home vs. Berry

Box Score

JACKSON, Miss. – In a home conference game with much at stake, the Millsaps Men's Soccer team grab a convincing win over Berry College(8-6, 3-2) to vault them ahead of Berry in the SAA standings. Big time plays on offense from Nico Roth and stifling defense led the Majors to victory on Friday, Oct. 14.

In this game, Millsaps(8-6, 4-1) took advantage of its many opportunities on offense, scoring three spectacular goals from Taylor Hayes, Nico Roth, and Tore Schütt. In a game that saw the ball dominated by the Majors and many shots attempted, the Majors only relented in the late minutes of each half to even allow any shots on goal to Berry. Coach Steve Voltz still felt the Majors could've been more efficient in front of the goal but was definitely still proud of the team's dominant ball control throughout the match.

In the match, Millsaps attempted 21 shots and six shots on goal to Berry's three shots and 1 shot on goal. Berry's goal came on their only shot on goal at the end of the second half on a late breakaway. Coach Voltz was glad that his team did a good job of absorbing the late lapse in defensive coverage and bouncing back in the second half to take the game.

Nico Roth had one goal and two assists, five shots and two shots on goal. Tore Schütt had a goal, three shots on goal and five shots attmepted. Steve Chrobok attempted two shots. Alex Bourland attempted four shots and registered one assist. Nat Edwards attempted two shots. Matt Crooker attempted two shots and got one assist. Javier Garcia got an assist.

As far as praise goes, Coach Voltz was so proud of the complete, team effort submitted by the Majors that it's hard to pick out anybody specific in a game like tonight. Overall, Voltz is really proud and happy that his team's hard work paid off against a very quality opponent in Berry and got the win that allows them to continue to stay in the thick of the competition for the top spot in the SAA regular season title race.

Next up is an Oglethorpe team that is currently 4-0-1 and sitting atop the SAA standings. The Majors are right behind them at 4-1 and have a chance to take the top spot in the conference with a win on Sunday. Sunday will also be Senior Day and each senior will be celebrated and have a chance to play in a big game in front of friends and family as they get sent off after great years within the Majors soccer program.
