Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football team fights hard, but ultimately falls to Washington University in St. Louis(6-1, 5-1) after a blocked field goal, 31-28.
On a day where Juan Joseph '08 was honored for his passion and heart, the Majors played with that same passion and heart against top ranked Wash U at home in front of a raucous homecoming crowd.
The Majors came roaring out the gate, with Taz Watson scoring a touchdown on the very first drive of the game after Millsaps drove 72 yards down the field. Wash U came down and scored after a couple of punts and then Millsaps proceeded to score the next ten points of the game, putting them up 16-7. Wash U, in their two minute offense, came down and scored a touchdown to make it 16-14 Majors at the half. In the 2nd half, Wash U went on to score the next ten points of the game and go up 24-14 before the Majors came roaring back to go up 28-24. Wash U then scored a touchdown on a big play, putting them up 31-28 before the Majors made two big drives to attempt to tie the game. The first drive ended in an interception on the one yard line and the second ended in a blocked field goal after the first made field goal was negated by a false start penalty.
Wash U's fast paced, no huddle offense proved be a challenge that the Majors were up to face all afternoon, the the Majors performed well, limiting WashU to only 344 yards total and outgained them 356 yards to 344. On defense, Millsaps forced two interceptions and achieved two sacks, with one being a clutch sack by Foust on third down in the fourth quarter.
The Majors run heavy offense featured Watson and Isaiah Talton on the ground and amassed 185 yards rushing with Ty Proctor contributing 154 yards passing. Rashad Sims led all Majors in receptions with four and Beau Wells led all Majors in receiving yards with 55. Kain Mitchell had a huge gain to put the Majors in the red zone late in the game that bolstered his total to 52 yards receiving on the day.
Reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week Running Back Taz Watson stole the show at the goal line once again, scoring an outstanding four touchdowns in his second straight performance with four touchdowns. Watson also gained 101 yards for his second week with 100 yards and four touchdowns in a row. On defense, Jared Bullock led the way with 13 total tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception that he returned for 20 yards. Alex Foust and Hector Sandoval both had sacks.
The first Juan Joseph Award presentation ceremony was held in the pre-game ceremony and defensive end Alex Foust was presented with the award in front of Joseph's family and friends. The Majors will next be in action on the road in Mount Berry, GA at Berry College.
