Box Score Jackson, MS – The Millaps Baseball Team won their home opener earlier today over LaGrange by a score of 3-2.
Today's contest also kicks off the Millsaps Invitational where four teams will compete at Twenty Field over the weekend. The Majors scored two in the fifth and another in the sixth to earn their second win of the early season. Majors starting pitcher
Daniel Ross earns the win while
Kenny Wright gets the save, as Millsaps moves to 2-2 on the year.
Both teams started the low scoring game with only a few combined hits through the first four innings. After a three up, three down top of the fifth, the Majors offense started to click.
Seth Trulock reached first on a well-placed bunt to start things off. Following Trulock's bunt,
Drew Wray singled to right field to put Millsaps in scoring position. A
Brennan Ducote sacrifice bunt put Trulock at third, setting up
Cavan Breland with an opportune at bat.
With Breeland and the top of the order at the plate, the Majors got their first run of the game on an RBI that scored Trulock. A Panthers' error allowed
Andy Page to reach first, which also scored
Drew Wray.
The Majors would end the positive fifth inning with two runs on two hits to take the lead.
In the sixth, the Panthers got their first run of the day with an RBI double.
Kenny Wright then came in to relieve Ross after 5.1 innings pitched. With the bases loaded, the Majors defense came up big to force a 643 double play, which ended the inning and scoring threat.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Drew Wray scored
Lee Ogletree on an RBI single to add the final run of the game for Millsaps.
The Panthers would add another in the eight, but
Kenny Wright and the Majors defense shut down LaGrange in the top of the ninth to secure the home opening win.
Cavan Breland,
Wes Lassere,
Seth Trulock and
Drew Wray all led the Majors with two hits each. The Majors finished with three runs on 10 hits and no errors while LaGrange finished with two runs on eight hits and one error.
The Majors will continue play in the Millsaps Invitational tomorrow with a rematch against Huntingdon. First pitch against the Hawks is set for 3:00 pm or 30 minutes after LaGrange and the Ozarks complete their matchup earlier in the day.
