Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Basketball Team earned their 10th win in conference play with a 47-40 victory over Hendrix earlier tonight.
With the win, the Majors now move to second place overall in the Southern Athletic Association and continue their longest win streak of the year at six consecutive games. Today's heavily contested matchup featured five ties and four different lead changes. After a 22-22 tie at halftime, the Majors outscored Hendrix 25-18 in the final 20 minutes of play. Millsaps ended the game on a 7-0 run to secure the win and improve to 18-6 on the year.
Both teams traded baskets throughout most of the intense game until Millsaps took an early fourth quarter lead on a pair of free throws by
Miah Brooks at the 6:52 mark. Neither team would score for the next four minutes until Hendrix answered with a layup and good free throw to tie the game 40-40.
With just under 90 seconds left in the game, the Majors began a late run to secure the victory and continue the win streak. Freshman
Braxton Thomas, who led the Majors in scoring, got the run started on a layup with 32 seconds left.
From there,
Katie Connor and the Majors defense forced a turnover to possibly take a two-possession lead. Seniors
Beverly Holmes and
Miah Brooks made their free throws after being fouled to give the Majors their largest lead of the second half.
A pair of
Kim Klunk free throws sealed the win for Millsaps, as they now take over sole possession of second place in the conference standings.
Braxton Thomas led the Majors in scoring with 14 points while
Kala-Jewel Freeman and
Katie Connor both finished with seven.
Kim Klunk and
Miah Brooks led in rebounds with eight (Klunk) and seven (Brooks) respectively as Klunk also led in blocks with two.
Millsaps led in points off turnovers 12-9, bench points 11-4 and finished 17-50 (34%) from the field and 4-14 (28%) on three pointers. Additionally, the Majors' defense held Hendrix to 0-11 on three pointers, 15-50 on field goals while also forcing 17 turnovers.
The Majors will continue play at the Hangar Dome for the final game of the regular season later this weekend. Senior Day for the Majors will take place this Sunday, Feb. 21st against Rhodes. Tip off against the Lynx is set for 1:00 pm from the Hangar Dome.
