Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Men's Basketball Team completed the regular season with a win over Rhodes College by a score of 50-46.
The Majors complete the regular season winning three of theie last four games, which included a three-game win streak. Today's contest featured only three lead changes, as the Majors held off a comeback effort by the Lynx to secure their final win of the regular season at the Hangar Dome.
Both teams played effective, tough defense as Rhodes and Millsaps combined for 33 total turnovers. Millsaps held a one-point advantage at halftime after an
Alex Gerchow layup gave the Majors a 19-18 lead.
From there, the Majors started the second half fast on a 12-2 run. Rhodes, however, responded by meticulously chipping away at the Millsaps double-digit lead.
Holding a two-point lead at the 1:45 mark, the Majors called a timeout to try and stop the late run by the Lynx. Following the stoppage of play, the Majors called upon
Marc Robertson to make a much needed three-pointer.
Robertson delivered by draining the three-point shot, giving Millsaps a late 45-40 lead. The Lynx responded with a Will McIntyre three-pointer to keep the contest a one score game.
Brennan Gagen made two free throws, but another McIntyre three kept the game close. Leading 47-46 with 18 seconds left in the game, the Majors successfully inbounded the ball needing only to make their remaining free throws to earn the win.
Robertson delivered again by making the remaining three points of the game on free throws to secure a 50-46 victory.
In shooting totals, the Majors finished 19-54 (35%) from the field and 3-14 (21%) on three pointers while the Lynx finished 17-59 (28%) from the field and 9-29 (31%) on three pointers. Sophomore
Quinn Atkinson led the Majors with 16 points as senior
Marc Robertson totaled 10.
Alex Gerchow also nearly earned a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Majors finish the regular season with an overall record of 5-20 and 4-10 in conference play. By winning three of the final four regular season games, the Majors secure the sixth seed for the conference tournament (hosted by Birmingham Southern).
The Millsaps Men's Basketball Team will travel to Birmingham, Ala. for conference tournament play to face third seed Centre this Friday. Tip off against the Colonels from Homewood High School is set for Friday, Feb. 26th at 8:00 pm CST.
