Box Score Danville, KY - The Millsaps Baseball Team scored seven runs in the ninth inning to clinch a series win over Centre College earlier today.
Saturday's 9-7 win marks the largest comeback of the season for the Majors, as they improve to 4-2 in conference play on the year. Despite leading 1-0 in the first, Millsaps trailed for most of the game before mounting the furious comeback. Trailing 7-2 in the ninth the Majors scored seven runs - four with two outs - to secure consecutive conference series wins.
Millsaps took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a
Lee Ogletree sacrifice fly that scored
Andy Page. The Colonels, however, responded scoring six unanswered runs, which gave Centre a 6-1 lead in the eighth.
Lee Ogletree again put the Majors on the board, crossing home plate on a wild pitch, but the Colonels responded with a run to lead 7-2 heading to the ninth. Down to their final three outs, the tenacious Majors put on the rally caps and went to work.
Needing five runs to tie the game, the Majors began the furious rally with a leadoff single to left field by
Logan Patterson.
Andy Page then advanced Patterson to second with another single, giving Millsaps a runner in scoring position.
The bases were then loaded when
Drew Wray was hit by a pitch, leaving the door open for an opportune at-bat for
Isaac Glenn. The preseason All-American delivered with an RBI single to left field that scored Patterson. Glenn's single gave the Majors new life as
Lee Ogletree stepped up to bat following a pitching change by Centre.
Left field continued to be a perfect landing spot for Millsaps, as Ogletree cut the deficit to three runs on another RBI single to left field. Following a strike out,
Connor Woodall reached first on a fielder's choice. Ogletree was out at second, but not before Glenn reached third and
Drew Wray scored.
The Majors were down to their last out, but the rally remained intact with runners on the corners and Centre's lead now only 7-5. Third baseman
Cavan Breland continued the myriad of scoring with an RBI single up the middle that scored Glenn.
Connor Woodall advanced to third on the RBI single while Breland advanced to second on the throw. Trailing just 7-6,
Brennan Ducote stepped in to pinch-hit for a potential game tying - or even game winning at-bat for Millsaps.
Ducote put an exclamation point on the relentless ninth inning rally with a two-RBI single to center field - giving Millsaps their first lead since the opening frame. Ducote's hit to center scored Breland and Woodall and gave the Majors an 8-7 lead.
The scoring would not end there either.
Logan Patterson was hit by a pitch to advance Ducote to second base.
Andy Page then capped off the ninth with a final RBI single, this time to center field.
In all, the Majors scored seven runs on seven hits in the positive top of the ninth to retake the lead. Only needing three outs for a series win,
Zack Borne and the Majors' defense took the field to close out the weekend of play.
A ground out and double play ended the game leaving Millsaps the victor. Overall, the Majors completed the comeback win with nine runs on 17 hits and two errors while the Colonels finished with seven runs on 14 hits and an error.
Lee Ogletree and
Brennan Ducote led in RBIs with two each.
Cavan Breland led in hits with four while
Andy Page totaled three.
Drew Wray,
Logan Patterson and
Lee Ogletree all recorded two hits each as
Isaac Glenn,
Connor Woodall,
Seth Trulock, and
Brennan Ducote each finished with a hit.
For pitching, junior
Daniel Gallarno earns his first win of the season while
Zack Borne gets the save. Today's comeback win, perhaps improbable to some of the 351 in attendance at Gary Wright Field, but never to the Majors, improves Millsaps to .500 on the year.
Now at 8-8, the Majors will look to continue the positive momentum with a midweek non-conference matchup. The Titans of Illinois Wesleyan will travel to Jackson, Mississippi on Tuesday to face the Majors.
First pitch from Twenty Field against Illinois Wesleyan is set for Tuesday, March 15th at 6:00 pm.
