Box Score Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Baseball Team gained some positive momentum to start the week with a 6-1, non-conference win over Illinois Wesleyan.
Monday's victory improves the Majors to 9-8 on the year, as they gave up one run on six hits for the contest. Sophomore
John Wiltshire earns his first win of the year allowing no runs in 4.2 innings pitched. The Majors scored twice in the second and once in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings to secure the 6-1 victory.
The Titans of Illinois Wesleyan got things started fast by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the first. From there, starting pitcher
Barret Kaul settled things down for Millsaps forcing two strikeouts and a ground out to first, avoiding the scoring threat.
Neither team would score until the bottom of the second. Designated hitter
Wes Lassere got things started with a leadoff walk. From there,
Seth Trulock hit a single, advancing Lassere to second. A
Joseph Stearns walk loaded the bases, giving
Logan Patterson an opportune at-bat.
Patterson reached on a fielder's choice, while Trulock and Lassere scored on a throwing error by the Titans. Patterson's well timed hit, coupled with some solid base running, gave the Majors their first score – and lead – of the day.
Two runs would be all the Majors needed too, as the Titans added their only run of the game in the third.
In the fourth, the Majors extended their lead when
Drew Wray reached first on a fielder's choice RBI. A
Joseph Stearns RBI single in the fifth and a
Lee Ogletree RBI double in the sixth gave Millsaps a 5-1 lead.
In the eighth, the Majors added another insurance run when
Connor Woodall stepped in to pinch-hit. Woodall delivered on an RBI single to third base, scoring
Drew Wray, which eventually proved to be the final run of the game.
Chris Guerin closed things out in the ninth, forcing two strikeouts and a ground out, securing the ninth win of the season for Millsaps.
Lee Ogletree,
Drew Wray,
Joseph Stearns and
Connor Woodall led in RBIs with one each. Stearns also led in hits with two, as did
Isaac Glenn and
Seth Trulock. The pitching trio of
Barret Kaul,
John Wiltshire and
Chris Guerin combined to give up one run on six hits for Monday's contest.
Now at 9-8, the Majors will look to continue the positive momentum heading into another conference series later in the week.
Millsaps Baseball will play the conference home opener this weekend for a series with Rhodes College. The weekend of play begins with a double header this Saturday, March 19th.
First pitch from Twenty Field against the Lynx is set for 1:00 pm.
