Box Score Jackson, MS - The Millsaps Baseball Team earned their fourth win of the season with a 5-2, non-conference victory over Adrian College at Twenty Field.
Wednesday's win improves the Majors to 4-6 on the year, as the Bulldogs fall to 0-1. Nine different pitchers took the mound for Millsaps tonight, giving up a combined two runs on seven hits in 40 batters faced. The Majors took the lead early with a two-run second and scored once in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings en route to the 5-2 win.
In the top of the first, the Bulldogs would threaten early by loading the bases. Millsaps' starting pitcher
Greg Matthews, however, answered with consecutive strikeouts to end the scoring threat - and top half of the inning.
Through the opening two frames, the Majors only gave up two hits while leaving a combined four runners left on base (thanks to the pitching of Matthews and
Daniel Ross).
The Majors then struck first with a two-run second inning. Third baseman
Cavan Breland got things started with a lead off walk. From there,
Chase Callaway singled through the right side, advancing Breland to third. With runners on the corners,
Logan Patterson stepped up for an opportune at-bat.
Patterson scored Breland on a sacrifice bunt to give the Majors their first score - and lead - of the day.
Andy Page then singled to left field, scoring Callaway. In all, the Majors scored two runs on two hits in the positive half inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third and fourth innings,
Daniel Adams and
Zack Borne pitched, surrendering no hits and no runs.
The Bulldogs would add their first run of the game in the fifth, but pitcher
Daniel Gallarno forced a fly out to end the inning with the Majors still leading 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Andy Page earned another RBI by scoring
Logan Patterson on a single to right-center field.
John Wiltshire then struck out the side in the sixth to keep the score 3-1.
Wes Lassere got things started in the following inning with a lead off walk and stolen base. A
Seth Trulock sacrifice bunt advanced Lassere to third, sending
Chase Callaway to the plate. Callaway advanced on a fielder's choice and thanks to some solid base running, Lassere scored to give the Majors a 4-1 lead.
Hayden Williams gave up no hits in the seventh, leaving the door open for another positive bottom half inning for Millsaps. This time
Drew Wray crossed home plate thanks to a
Lee Ogletree RBI single up the middle.
Holding a 5-1 lead, the Majors called upon
Kenny Wright to pitch in the eighth. Wright delivered with a quick three-up, three-down top half of the inning, leaving the needed outs for a win to just three.
In the ninth,
Jacob Mardick stepped in to close the game for Millsaps. Following a strike out, the Bulldogs added their second run with an RBI double. From there, left fielder
Andy Page said hey with an incredible Willie Mays, over the shoulder style catch to force the second out.
A fly out that landed in
Seth Trulock's glove ended the game and secured the fourth win of the season for the Majors.
The Bulldogs, who are preseason favorites to win the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association), finish their first game of the season with two runs on seven hits and two errors.
Millsaps completes the game with five runs on eight hits and one error. Of the nine pitchers that played in today's contest, none gave up more than two hits. No pitcher faced more than six batters either, as the Majors had four different players record RBIs.
Andy Page led the way with two RBIs and two hits while
Lee Ogletree,
Chase Callaway and
Logan Patterson all recorded one. Starting pitcher
Greg Matthews improves to 1-2 on the year, as the Majors will look to use the positive momentum heading into conference play this weekend.
Next up for Millsaps Baseball, is a road series against Oglethorpe to open conference play. The Majors and Stormy Petrels will play a double header this Saturday, March 4th followed by another game Sunday, March 5th.
Both games will be held on Anderson Field at Hermance Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
