Greg Matthews earned his third win of the season pitching seven and two thirds innings in a 3-0 victory at Birmingham Southern.
Millsaps defeated the Panthers, who are ranked third in the nation (d3baseball.com), on Friday for the first matchup in a three-game series. Mathews shined in Friday's contest pitching a shutout in 35 batters faced while striking out six.
Chris Guerin stepped in to close out the game, earning his second save of the season.
Connor Woodall had the lone RBI for Millsaps, as the Majors finished the game with three runs on 11 hits and two errors.
Both teams remained scoreless until the third inning. The Majors struck first when
Connor Woodall stepped up to bat with
Chase Callaway in scoring position. Woodall delivered with an RBI single to right center scoring Callaway and putting the Majors on the board 1-0.
Matthews and the Majors' defense continued the solid play by holding the Panthers' scoreless for the next three innings. Millsaps then earned some insurance with a two-run seventh.
Andy Page got things started with a single to center field. From there,
Drew Wray singled up the middle and advanced to second, as Page scored on a fielding error by Birmingham Southern.
Wray then advanced to third on a
Chase Callaway ground out, giving
Logan Patterson an opportune at-bat. Patterson reached on a throwing error by the Panthers, which allowed Wray to cross home plate.
In all, the Majors scored two runs on two hits and two errors in the positive seventh. In the eighth, Matthews' outstanding night came to a close. With two outs on the board and runners at second and third,
Jacob Mardick stepped in to pitch – and delivered with a huge strikeout to end the inning and scoring threat.
In the ninth,
Chris Guerin was called upon to close the game for the Majors. Guerin continued his excellent play forcing a three-up, three-down bottom of the ninth -securing the win for Millsaps.
Drew Wray led in hits with three while
Isaac Glenn and
Andy Page finished close behind with two each. Chase Callway,
Brennan Ducote,
Cavan Breland and
Connor Woodall also totaled a hit, as the Majors earned the 3-0 win.

With the win, the Majors improve to 12-10 on the year and 6-4 in conference play. The Panthers and Majors will play a double-header tomorrow, March 26th to decide a series winner.
Millsaps will look to earn their third conference series win of the season, as first pitch for game one is set for 12:00 pm at Striplin Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
