Box Score Jackson, MS – After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Majors scored six unanswered runs and retired 12 straight batters en route to a 6-2 win over local rival Belhaven.
Tuesday's contest marks the second of three total games for the season series, as the Blazers traveled up Riverside Drive to face the Majors at Twenty Field. Belhaven struck early with a two-run homerun to left field, but the Majors answered by taking the lead in the second – and never looked back. With the win, Millsaps Baseball improves to 13-12 and takes the series while the Blazers fall to 13-9.
Majors' starting pitcher
Kenny Wright earns the win for Millsaps giving up four runs on two hits in six innings. Wright also struck out six batters, as he – along with
Chris Guerin – helped the Majors pitch eight shutout innings en route to the 6-2 win.
Lee Ogletree led the Majors in RBI with two while
Andy Page,
Drew Wray,
Connor Woodall and
Isaac Glenn recorded one each. The trio of
Andy Page,
Drew Wray and
Cavan Breland led in hits with three each as well.
After giving up the two-run homer in the first, the Majors responded in the bottom half of the inning with an
Isaac Glenn RBI. Glenn scored
Andy Page as the Majors trailed early 2-1.
From there, Millsaps took the lead with a two-run second.
Cavan Breland got things started with a leadoff single.
Chase Callaway then reached with a well-placed bunt, which advanced Breland into scoring position.
Logan Patterson then advanced the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, giving
Andy Page an opportune at-bat. Page delivered with an RBI groundout to short, scoring Breland and tying the game.
A
Drew Wray single to right field then scored Callaway as the Majors finished the positive second taking the lead with two runs and three hits.
The second inning rally proved to be the difference maker in Tuesday's contest, but the Majors were not done scoring. Millsaps extended their lead with a three-run fourth.
Lee Ogletree recorded a two RBI double to center field, which scored
Drew Wray and
Andy Page. Designated hitter
Connor Woodall then scored
Isaac Glenn on a sacrifice fly. In all the Majors increased their lead in the fourth with three runs on three hits – which eventually proved to be the final scoring on the night.
The next inning also proved beneficial in securing the win, as the Majors began the series of retiring 12 straight batters in the fifth. The Blazers would not reach base again until the ninth where they threatened with two runners on and one out.
Chris Guerin, however, was never fazed as the reliever closed out the game with a fly out to right field and strike out to secure the 6-2 win.
In all, the duo of
Kenny Wright and
Chris Guerin held Belhaven to just two runs on six hits. Wright pitched six innings while Guerin closed the game giving up two hits in three scoreless innings and striking out four batters.
With the win,
Kenny Wright also improves to 3-0 on the year. The Majors finished with six runs on 14 hits as neither team committed an error in Tuesday's contest.
Now at 13-12, the Majors will look to sweep the season series with another game tomorrow, March 30th. First pitch for the third and final regular season game between the Blazers and Majors is set for 3:00 pm at Twenty Field.
