Majors Secure Win in Opening Conference Series with Sunday Victory

Box Score Atlanta, Georgia – The Millsaps Baseball Team secured their first series win in SAA play with a 16-7 road victory against Oglethorpe.

After trading runs through the first six innings, the Majors took the lead with a two-run seventh.  From there, Millsaps added an insurance run in the eighth and removed all doubt in the ninth with six runs to earn the 16-7 win.  Sunday's win improves the Majors to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

For the second straight game, the Majors scored the go-ahead, game winning runs in the seventh inning.  Isaac Glenn got things started with an RBI single, followed by a Lee Ogletree sacrifice bunt that scored Wes Lassere.  Glenn led the Majors with a season high four RBIs on three hits while Lee Ogletree continued his excellent weekend play with three RBIs.

In all, the Majors scored a season high 16 runs on 17 hits with just two errors.  Also, for consecutive games, the Majors came from behind to earn the win.

Trailing 2-0 through the first two frames, the Majors took the lead scoring four runs in the third inning.  After Logan Patterson was hit by a pitch and stole second, Isaac Glenn stepped up for an opportune at-bat.

Glenn delivered with his first RBI of the day, sending Patterson home on a single to left field.  Another Major was hit by a pitch – this time Lee Ogletree – advancing Glenn to second.  Glenn then stole third, leaving the door open for another run.

This time Brennan Ducote singled through the left side to score Glenn and Ogletree on a two-run RBI, giving the Majors their first lead of the day.  A Connor Woodall double scored Ducote, which closed out the positive third for Millsaps.

When the smoke settled from the top half of the inning, the Majors totaled four runs on three hits and one error.

Oglethorpe, however, answered by tying the game on two runs in the following inning.  With the score tied 4-4, the Majors retook the lead in the fifth on a Drew Wray RBI double and another Isaac Glenn RBI ground out.

The Stormy Petrels again answered to tie the game in the fifth, 6-6.  Both teams scored a run in the sixth to remain tied heading to the seventh (Drew Wray scored for the Majors on a throwing error by the catcher).

In the seventh, the Majors loaded the bases with no outs on three straight walks.  With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, Isaac Glenn recorded his third RBI of the day on a single to right field.  The shot to right field scored Wes Lassere as the Majors took the lead – and never looked back.

A Lee Ogletree sacrifice bunt scored Logan Patterson as the Majors scored the eventual game winning runs in the seventh for the second straight game.  Millsaps scored two runs on one hit in the positive seventh, leaving the needed outs for a win to just six.

Zack Borne and the Majors' defense stepped up in the following inning to allow a chance for some insurance runs.  A Connor Woodall leadoff single got things started in the eighth, leaving an RBI opportunity open for Wes Lassere.  Lassere scored the first insurance run with a sacrifice RBI, giving the Majors a 10-7 lead.

A quick three-up, three-down bottom of the eighth sent the game to the ninth with Millsaps holding a three-run lead.

The raucous ninth inning started with an Isaac Glenn leadoff walk.  From there, Lee Ogletree stepped up to bat for the Majors.  Ogletree smashed a two-run homer to right field, increasing the Millsaps lead to four.

Following the two-run shot, Connor Woodall singled, Cavan Breland hit an RBI double and Wes Lassere hit another RBI single – and the rout was on.  Drew Wray scored Lassere on an RBI single, followed by another Isaac Glenn RBI – this time on a double down the left field line.

In all, the Majors added six runs on seven hits in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring on the day.  Holding a nine run lead, pitcher Hayden Williams and the Majors closed out the game to secure their first conference series win of the season.

Glenn and Ogletree led in RBIs while Connor Woodall led in hits with four.  Eight different Majors recorded a hit in Sunday's contest, as junior pitcher Zack Borne earned the win giving up one earned run on four hits in four innings pitched.

Now at 6-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play, the Majors will get a chance to rest next week for Spring Break before traveling for another conference road series.

Next up for Millsaps Baseball is a conference road matchup in Danville, Kentucky against Centre.

First pitch at Gary Wright Field for a series opening double-header is set for next Saturday, March 12th.
