Baseball: Late Comeback and Effective Pitching leads to Pair of Wins over Sewanee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jackson, MS – A late game one comeback effort in the ninth coupled with a solid pitching performance helped the Millsaps Baseball team secure their third series win of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's double-header marked the first of three games for the weekend against Sewanee.  After falling behind 5-2 in the eighth, the Majors stormed back on a furious rally to win the first game of the day 6-5.  The Majors then secured a close 1-0 victory as starting pitcher Daniel Adams surrendered no runs on two hits while striking out four in six innings.  Chris Guerin closed the game in the seventh and final inning as the Majors improve to 15-13 with the pair of wins.

Andy Page and Connor Woodall led the Majors in RBIs with two each while designated hitter Jacob Mardick had the lone RBI in the second game.  Andy Page led in hits with four on the day as Lee Ogletree, Logan Paterson and Connor Woodall each totaled two.

Millsaps started the first game with a great deal of positive momentum thanks to the pitching of Greg Matthews.  Matthews threw a perfect game through five innings and a no hitter through six until tiring in the seventh.  In all, the Majors' ace retired 15 straight batters to start the game, allowing Millsaps to hold an early lead.

Connor Woodall put the Majors on the board in the second with a single through the left side.  Seth Trulock then scored Cavan Breland on a sacrifice bunt to give Millsaps an early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers, however, answered by taking the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth.  Trailing 5-2, the Majors put on the rally caps and went to work.

Cavan Breland got things started with an RBI single through the right side.  Connor Woodall then scored Lee Ogletree on an RBI single to cut the deficit to one run.

In the following inning, Hayden Williams and the Majors' defense kept Sewanee from scoring any insurance runs, as the top of the order was due up in the bottom of the ninth for Millsaps.

Logan Patterson kept the rally going with a single to the shortstop.  Drew Wray then walked, putting the tying run at second base.  Wray and Patterson then advanced further into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt by the Tigers.  Isaac Glenn then walked to load the bases with no outs.

Lee Ogletree then reached first on a fielder's choice, but the Tigers threw out Patterson at home plate on a game-winning run.  The bases, however, remained loaded with Andy Page up to bat.

Page delivered with a hard hit single up the middle to score Glenn as a fielding error by Sewanee then allowed Wray to score – securing the win and comeback for the Majors.  The two RBI single for Page solidified the win and excellent pitching performance by Greg Matthews as Millsaps earned the victory with six runs on 12 hits and three errors.

The Majors then secured a victory in the second game, which proved to be the quickest of the season.  Daniel Adams continued the impressive pitching performance on the day for the Majors pitching six shutout innings.

Adams gave up just two hits with four strikeouts while Jacob Mardick scored the lone run with an RBI single in the second.  Mardick's hit scored right fielder Brennan Ducote as the Majors only needed a single run to earn the victory.

Leading 1-0 in the seventh and final inning, the Majors called upon Chris Guerin to close out the day of play.  Guerin delivered with a three-up, three-down top of the inning to solidify another save and series win for the Majors.

Now at 15-13 (8-6), the Millsaps Baseball team will look to earn a series sweep with another game scheduled for tomorrow, April 3rd.  First pitch for the third and final game between the Majors and Tigers is set for 12:00 pm at Twenty Field.
