Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football team grabs its first win of the season, defeating Trinity University 24-20 on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Harper Davis Field.
Sophomore quarterback
Chance Clowers led the Major offense completing 13 of 26 passes for 181 yards and 1 touchdown.
Beau Wells led Millsaps in receiving with 5 receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown and
Andrew Warren head the Majors run game with 8 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown, averaging 10.4 yards per carry.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Hector Sandoval led in tackles with 10 total (7 solo and 3 assist) and 1.0 tackles for a loss of 2 yards.
Alex Foust had a major night defensively grabbing 7 solo tackles with one tackle assist and 6.0 tackles for a loss of 22 yards. Foust also put heavy pressure on the Trinity quarterbacks for 3.0 sacks.
The Majors were clearly on a mission during Saturday's competition scoring the first points and leading the Tigers for almost the entire game.
To begin the scoring effort,
Carson King completed a 35-yard field goal at the top of the second quarter to put the Majors up 3-0.
With only two minutes ticking off the clock after the successful field goal, Clowers completed a 65 yard pass to Beau Well to extend the Majors lead to 10-0.
Trinity scored their first points of the game four minutes later, landing a 37-yard field goal to cut the Millsaps lead to 10-3.
After the Tiger field goal, Millsaps took the ball at their own 8 and drove the ball down the 92-yard stretch in just seven plays for a Major touchdown. With a first down and inches, Isaiah Thomas carried the ball into the end zone with 8:55 minutes left in the half to put the score at 17-3, Millsaps.
Not being defeated easily, Trinity scored their first touchdown with 6:11 left in the half to put the score at 17-10, just striking distance of the Millsaps lead.
Trinity took their first and only lead of the game after sticking a 33-yard field goal and completing a 7-yard pass for a touchdown to lead the Majors by three-points with just 1:32 left in the third quarter.
With 6:09 left in the game, Alex Warren carried the ball for 30 yards to seal the Milllsaps win for with point after by King putting the final score a 24-20.
The Majors travel to Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, Sept. 17 to face the University of Chicago in their first road game of the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
