Box Score 2 MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Millsaps Women's Volleyball goes 1-1 in day two of the Berry College Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Majors started the day on a great note, defeating Maryville College 3-2 (24-26, 25-14, 25-21, 14-25, 17-15). It was not an easy feat for the Majors. Three sets were decided by less than four points.
Millsaps out performed Maryville offensively recording 55 kills to the Scots 44 but went neck and neck defensively. Both teams tallied 68 digs while the Majors recorded eight blocks while the Scots recorded 14.
Mogan Vincent led the Major offense with a game high of 17 kills.
Shelby Marsh lent a match high of 22 assists and Reagan Riddle delivered a match high of four service aces.
For the Major defense,
Ashley Zamjahn recorded 15 digs and Riddle led with four blocks.
The Majors were not as successful in their second match of the day. Millsaps fell 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 13-25) to Washington and Lee.
Millsaps recorded more total attacks than the Generals with 104 to the General's 88 but was unable to convert them into kills falling seven shorts of the General's 27.
Washington and Lee was also able to mount a better defense than the Majors. The Generals recorded 45 digs to the Majors 40 and 16 blocks to the Majors 5.
Erica Bennett led the Major offense with six kills and
Morgan Vincent led the defense with 10 digs.
For her effort during the tournament, Zamjahn was named to the Berry Invitational All-Tournament team.
"This was a great opportunity to face south region opponents and see how we compare against them," said head coach Jaime Fisher. " We have a lot of work todo but a ton of potential. We are playing a pretty young line up, so as we work in trust and communication I am excited to see how we progress."
As the Majors play more games, the newcomers are finding their footing . "Our freshmen class is going to be a big part of our success this year," said Fisher. "Morgan Vincent and Erica Bennett have begun to solidify their roles in our line up."
The Millsaps women's volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to participate in the Rhodes College Tournament. While there, the Majors will face Letourneau University, Covenant College, and LaGrange College.
