MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – MIllsaps was swept in their conference match at Berry on Sunday, (13-25, 17-25, 23-25) but then rebounded to sweep William Peace (25-15, 25-20, 25-17) to split the day.
Match 1:
MIllsaps' four-match conference winning streak came to an end in their first game of the day at Berry.
Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) continued her strong play as of late, leading the team offensively with 12 kills.
On the defensive end,
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) finished with 14 digs while
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) had 12 and
Meredith Gates (Broussard, La.) tallied ten digs, Marsh also led the Majors with 22 assists.
MIllsaps jumped out to a 3-2 lead over the Vikings in the first set. Berry then went on a 15-4 run to take an 18-7 lead and ran away to take a one set to none lead.
In the second, Millsaps kept things closer. The Majors found themselves down just 7-6 in the early stages and after Berry went ahead 17-10, Millsaps scored the next five out of six points to bring the deficit to just three points. The Vikings then went on a 7-2 run to close out the second set.
Millsaps played their best in the third set taking a 15-12 lead to force Berry to take a timeout. The Vikings came out of their huddle determined and went on a 10-4 run to take a 22-19 lead. MIllsaps ended up tying the match at 23 but Berry scored the final two points to take the match.
Match 2:
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) led the Majors this time with nine kills while
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
had eight and Bennett finished the match with seven.
Zamjahn finished with 31 digs making it her eighth match with 30-plus digs this season, she now has 501 on the season. Joining her in double figures was Marsh who tallied 11 digs and 32 assists and
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge La.) who had ten digs.
William Peace kept it close in the first set. With the score tied a nine, Millsaps ran away from the Pacers outscoring them 16-6 to take the first set.
Millsaps had a tougher time in the second set. The Majors saw their 13-10 lead become an 18-13 deficit after William peace went on an 8-0 run.
Madelyn Pearce then began serving for Millsaps and the team regained their composure, outscoring the Pacers 11-3 to go up two sets to none.
MIllsaps was in control during set three. The Majors used a 10-2 run in the middle of the set to their advantage and completed the sweep, ending it with a kill by Riddle.
With the split, Millsaps is now 12-10 on the season and 6-5 in SAA play. The Majors are back in action on Wednesday at Birmingham Southern for a 6:00 p.m. start.
