Volleyball Falls Short at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – MIllsaps traveled to Birmingham Southern Wednesday night for their final SAA road test this regular season. The Majors fell to the Panthers in a tightly contested four set match (17-21, 25-21, 14-25, 21-25).

Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) finished the match with a high of 33 digs while Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.) and Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) each had ten digs, Marsh also tallied 33 assists and six kills. Offensively, Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) was the only Major to earn double figure kills with ten. Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) had eight kills while Morgan Vincent (Lafayette, La.) finished with seven.

MIllsaps never led in the first set but kept things close early on keeping a one point deficit with the score 9-8. BSC then pulled away scoring the next 11 out of 15 points to take a 20-12 lead and put away the Majors.

MIllsaps rebounded by taking the second set and knotting up the match at a set apiece. After a slow start saw the Majors down 12-5, MIllsaps began to make their move to take the lead. They outscored the Panthers 15-7 to tie the set at 19. The Majors then closed out the set on a 6-2 run highlighted by a kill by Vincent, an ace by Zamjahn, and a set clinching kill by Riddle.

The Majors were unable to keep their momentum going in the third set. BSC used a strong middle and end to the set to take a two sets to one lead.

In the fourth, MIllsaps got out to a fast start and found themselves up 15-10. But a 6-0 run by the Panthers gave them the confidence they needed to finish the set strong and take the match.

With the loss, Millsaps is now 12-11 on the season and 6-6 in SAA play. The Majors are back in action for a crucial SAA contest at home against Hendrix starting at 12:00 p.m. where the team will celebrate senior day.
