JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps College was within eight points of #18 Berry College in the fourth quarter with the ball in Vikings territory, but a turnover and a subsequent touchdown by Berry enabled the Vikings to come away with a 37-22 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) victory. Junior
Chance Clowers (Monroe, La.) threw for a season-high 270 yards for the Majors.
Berry (8-0, 6-0 SAA) got off to a quick start in the game, scoring on four if its first five possessions. After opening the game with a field goal, the Vikings pinned Millsaps (3-4, 2-3 SAA) deep in its own territory and forced a punt. Berry then started its ensuing drive on the Millsaps 35 and in four plays was in the end zone on an 11-yard pass from Slade Dale to Mason Kinsey. The Vikings defense held the Majors to just 13 yards of offense in the first quarter and their offense came up with two more TDs early in the second quarter that put them on top 23-0 with 11:01 left in the half.
Millsaps then saw its offense come to life, with the Majors getting on the board at the 4:10 mark of the half on little flip in the backfield from Clowers to junior
Kain Mitchell (Slidell, La.) that turned into a 14-yard score. The Millsaps defense then held Berry to a three-and-out, with the offense responding with a 75-yard drive that was culminated by a 14-yard scoring throw from Clowers to senior
Tanner Menist (Jackson, Miss.) that had the Majors back within 11 at the half at 23-14.
Defense ruled the third quarter, with Millsaps holding Berry to 49 yards and no points and the Vikings also keeping the Majors off the scoreboard, including making a stop on a fourth-and-one at its own five.
Early in the fourth Berry looked as if it might have the game put away when it saw Dale complete a 21-yard scoring pass to Kinsey with 13:52 left that made it 30-14. But Millsaps responded on its next drive when Clowers threw one into the back of the end zone where freshman
John Bourgeois (Sulpher, La.) made a leaping grab with a defender on him for the score. Bourgeois and Clowers then teamed again for a two-point conversion that made it 30-22 with 11:09 left.
With a little more than four minutes left Millsaps got the break it needed when freshman
Dylan Higgins (Cypress, Texas) recovered a fumble on the Berry 28. On the next play, however, Clowers was intercepted and four plays later Dale found Kinsey streaking down the field and hit him for a 60-yard score with two minutes left that iced the game for the Vikings.
