JACKSON, Miss. – MIllsaps swept Rhodes in dominating fashion in the final home match of the season on Sunday afternoon. The win secures them the fourth seed in the upcoming SAA tournament (25-20, 25-11, 25-13).
The Majors defense stood out,
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) led the team with 28 digs while
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) and
Meredith Gates (Broussard, La.) each had ten,
Payton Passantino (Plaquemine, La.)
finished with nine and
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.) and
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) both finished with eight digs.
Offensively,
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way with nine kills while Riddle and
Morgan Vincent (Lafayette, La.) both had seven kills. Marsh also led all players with 33 assists.
Set one was the most competitive, MIllsaps got out to a fast 12-6 lead. But Rhodes made their move by going on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 13. With the score tied at 16, the Majors scored the next nine out of 12 points to take the one set lead.
Millsaps was in complete control in the second set. They started it out by going ahead 5-0 and eventually brought the score to a 20-9 lead. Millsaps closed out the set by going on a 5-2 run to go up two sets to none.
The third and final set of the day was very similar to the second. Millsaps scored the first four points and kept it coming by bringing the lead to 22-9 after the Majors went on a 17-9 run. Millsaps then scored the final three points to secure the match.
Millsaps improves to 13-12 on the season and finishes SAA play with a 7-7 record in conference. The Majors will play as the number four seed in the SAA tournament. Before that, MIllsaps plays two matches on Friday against Texas-Tyler and LeTourneau starting at 2:00 p.m. in the Centenary Halloween Tournament.
